OK, so I just ordered a fujita f5 competition intake on ebay, got a good deal @ $146 + shipping... so, I've heard some contraversy to proven hp gains, and I wondering if anyone out there has tried them, or even similar systems, and how they turned out after intall???

I've tried a ractive heat sheild before (92 civic ), with an air tight tube to a custom intake in the lower grill which is essentially a "ram air" system... I think it worked well but never dyno'd... now do you think this would help keep hot air from the engine to a min if I tried this on the G35?

Thanks again... grant

My advise....

Take your car to the track run it with the stock filter set up. Record all the weather data when you run.

Put on the new filter set up and run it again. Record all the weather data.

You can SAE correct the times for weather and prove to yourself if the cold air intake works or not.

I beat a current body Mustang GT in the 1/4 mile so i know mine works. Some time when I run during the day I'm going to do back to back runs with the stock vs Fujita to prove it to all the doubters.

Dyno's are a hp measuring tool in a extremely controled enviornment. They are better used for tuning a FI car then guaging intake preformance. Most of your intake performance gain is increased airflow. That is difficult to measure when the car is not actually moving. Now I know they have a giant fan blowing hot air across the motor with the hood open but that is not the same as running on the street where the air under the hood is constantly being exchanged.

My vehicle before was a 14 second 5,000lb 4 door Hemi Ram. The dyno said I made 267 RWHP... there is no way I can run 14.0's in a 5000 lb truck with only 267 hp. The amount of HP the dyno says you make is so variable based on the dyno type and the dyno operator. If you want to see a 15 - 20 hp gain let the operator know and you'll see it on back to back runs LOL.

(Gwoods)...

tell me... what is your current set-up? Like I said, I have the intake on order now... I don't have a track near by, but the tunershop in town will do it with the install and give me the results... I want to know more about the intake system as well.... (I read the recent post about the resinators in the stock intake housing, but I'm thinking of ways to connect that to a heat sheilded intake pic above... to cut out the hot air completely

Thanks for the advice, and I agree, the driving will be the true test, I always install myself, (see altima) And with my G, I have less faith in myself and look to others for better direction... people like you..

Thanks,

Grant

Just take it and get it dyno'd before/after install (they'll normally do a few runs for the one price). Can you return the filter? Just stick it on and see what happens. Remember to reset your ecu. I also think it greatly depends on what climate you live in too as to how good/bad an open filter would work.

As I said in the previous thread my car lost 10rwhp with the intake on and ran badly lean. The intake was obviously working due to the lean running, but the loss in hp could only be attributed to it sucking in alot of hot air. Yes, the car isn't moving on a dyno and so isn't getting maximum air flow but I really do believe now that a box setup is best for our cars as it shields all the heat generated from the engine (touch the inside of the box with your fingers after you've been driving for awhile, the outside is pretty warm but the inside is still nice and cool.

I am going to try the Stillen airbox with custom pipe at some stage and see if i have the same problems.

Did you ever get it dyno'd before/after install?

Dyno's can show whatever the operator wants them to show within a 10-20 hp range. The same gain you would expect from an intake.

The effects of an intake are difficult to measure on a dyno since your car is not moving.

I will never dyno anything again unless I am trying to tune air fuel ratio after a major upgrade, like turbo or super charging.

I will do back to back track testing at some point. Whenever my track has day racing and I make it out. The testing is for the doubters, my car is running corrected 13.6's so I know its slightly faster then stock.

OK... I've been running this setup for 2 months now... and just today my service engine soon light came on... I think where it's getting warmer now it's starting to be a problem... I went up a few big hills and I wasn't driving normal.... I slowly came down a hill and it just came on... not blinking, just solid so I'm thinking emmisions... as stated in manual...

Anyway... do you think where it's warm.. its causing a problem? I would hate to lose the nice sound... but I recently installed a new heatshield from HKS and it's not quite working for me, I wish now I just went with the Ztube setup... but I digress...

I know I'll end up gettingthe code checked, but should I try and reset the ECU and revisit my intake assembly with reincorporating some stock components with a K&N filter for the warm summer months?

Any advice is greatly appreciated... I love my car, but I've only had er 3 1/2 months now, and this is the first real bummer... other than the fact I cant engage my clutch like you 6mt owners .

Hey Brandaid, Both Gwoods and I run the same set up with the Fujita Dual short ram intake with no heat shield. We live in the hottest environment known to man where temps regularly reach 115-118 degrees in the summer. I can't speak for Gwoods, but I've never had a problem with heat affecting the intakes. I drive up, down and through mountains everyday to work and it's never given me an issue so I don't think a hill should cause you any grief. Even in the summer when the sun is scorching and you could cook a steak on the hood my temp gauge doesn't budge and I've never had a service engine soon light. How's your temp gauge working? is it overheating on you? I would think that in your climate, moisture may be a concern, but I wouldn't bet on heat... Just my $.02

Thanks for the info...

I removed my heatshield and the filter was kinda jammed tight against the intake tube.... I think it may have been gasping for air.... Or something...

I agree, the light shouldn't have come on due to the heat... BUT THANKS! ALL IS WELL

Make sure everything is fastened tight. And getting a car dynod for an intake is kindof a waste of money. The gains or loses you get arent going to be worth the $300+ to get it dynod.

Here in Phoenix you can usually get 3 pulls on the dyno for $75.
