Before buying my 2008 G37S coupe, I compared it to 2004 and 2005 G35s. The G37 is altogether a better car. Infiniti engineers spent five years figuring out how to improve on the G35. It should be no surprise that they succeeded.

One of the improvements is better ride quality without sacrificing handling. Part of my test route was a mile of brick pavement. My 24-year-old RX-7 (McPherson struts and solid rear axle) handled it better than the G35. Compared to both of them, the G37 rides and handles better.

Although the G37 is heavier than the G35, its more powerful engine keeps performance the same. The new engine is also smoother and slightly more fuel efficient.

I'm not a fan of automatic transmissions, but the new 7-speed is pretty good. Seven speeds are better than five, which is all you get with a G35. If Nissan ever develops a dual-clutch, electrically-operated transmission like Porsche's PDK, I will have to take a look.

If you are shopping, the one option I strongly recommend is the Premium package. The dealer's loaner cars usually do not have it and they feel plain compared to my car.

+1 on the premium package.

I felt the same way when I had the loaner. The premium just adds enough to make it feel like a luxury car. I felt like I was driving a fast Altima in the loaner... Still very nice but not posh. Yes I am a yuppie scum bag and proud of it.

Yeah, it's hard for me to choose at this point. The coupe is so tight and fun to drive with great power. The sedan has every option (rear steer is interesting and AFS is cool) and great power which makes it fun to drive too. The coupe is more controlled than the sedan which has more of a tendency to kick the rear out.

I finally played around with the intelligent cruise on the sedan the other day, pretty nifty

Rear wheel steering and the technology package were two options I deliberately rejected when I bought my G37S.

Infiniti designed the rear wheel steering to control tail wagging during abrupt lane changes on the interstate. I trust that it works as claimed. However, fast driving on a winding road or a race track is a completely different environment that the computer seems to have difficulty understanding. Edmunds couldn't drive an accurate line during a track test because the computer couldn't make up its mind what to do with the rear wheels. They much preferred the car without rear wheel steering. I also read a comment by a Canadian who had experience with the HICAS system on the 300ZX. The first time he took the car through a fast corner, it scared the crap out of him.

I don't like adaptive cruise control. When the cruise control is engaged, I need to be able to trust that the car will hold a constant speed. On multi-lane roads, unless traffic is too heavy, I set the cruise for a reasonable speed and change lanes to get around slower cars. The last thing I want is for the cruise control to drop the throttle right in the middle of a lane change. To add insult to injury, adaptive cruise control systems set off other people's laser detectors because they transmit a laser beam on the same wavelength as laser speed guns.

If I track anything it will be the coupe and not the sedan thus I have no issues with rear steer. I think that is the 2nd time in 8 years I've used cruise control but thought it was a neat gadget as it will automatically slow you when you overtake (it is adjustable from a sensitivity perspective).

When I bought the sedan I didn't know it had the tech and 4AWS packages until after I got home. Works well for the wife.

Well, my dad has a 2005 G35 and I just purchased an 09 G37. Having spent time with both, here is my short take...

The G37 is more comfortable, rides nicer, is a bit more powerful, and has a much better interior.

The G35 sounds better, feels sportier, has superior (tighter) steering feel, and makes a more direct link between driver and road.

Of course a G35 will be cheaper, but there are FANTASTIC deals right now on remaining 09 G37s. With incentives, I bought my car for over 4000 below invoice. Overall, both are great cars and I would be happy driving either.
