My car is burning a quart of oil every 1500 miles. This seems excessive. The exhaust tips are layered with soot. Anyone with this problem?

For the newly designed engine Nissan is saying that even 1 quart per 1,000 miles is ok. Higher performance larger than 3.0 V6 with light ring tension and floating cylinders can suffer from more oil usage till the rings set correctly. US fuel quality is another variable......ethanol and high sulfur make witches brew for an engine designed and tested in Japan.

Remember the Warranty burden is on you to keep the oil filled and not let it go below the low mark.

Usually by 15,000 miles the problem either corrects itself or gets worse.

Nice that the Infiniti engine warranty is 70,000 miles vs Nissans.

They are swapping out a few engines but those use a quart every 750 miles.

Check your oil weekly so you don't get blamed for running out of oil.

Can't wait to see what changes are being made in the new 298 HP [V6 3.5] engine.

Keep accurate mileage oil addition date records!

Infiniti has agreed to swap out a short block. I am wary as to whether the dealer can do a good job and whether I should request a long block, as the valves may be the culprit. I am also afraid that this will negatively impact resale value. What are my chances of getting Infiniti to buy the car back?

Also, how do I know that I am getting the right block for the coupe, as this engine is used on many Nissan models?

How long have you had the vehicle? What state? Check into the lemon laws. If you're you meet the criteria, they have to buy it back.

Unfortunately Lemon Laws tend to be active between zero to 12,000 or 18,000 miles depending on state.

Not sure that burning less than a quart per thousand miles qualifies as a lemon............they might just give you 6 cases of oil [6 x12=72] snd have a nice day.........it's when the oil to gasoline use ratio exceeds 1% [1 quart of oil per 500 miles driven]..........that real smoking develops.

Newer more powerful [in small sizes] engine owners will have to get use to more oil consumption compared to 1990s engines. Unfortunately.

As the top 3.5 produces almost [or equal depending on tune] the same peak horsepower as the old 4.5 V8 Q..........just 14% less torque.

The old Q engine was just a lightly loaded lumbering V8 compared to todays stressed V6. Same with new Q engine still the lux HP class V8 leader per displacement/power output...........1.24 HP per cubic inch compared to top Corvette 1.15............the G35 power plants are at 1.3HP+ per cubic inch.

Lots of streetable power from 215 cubic inches.

For extreme long term reliability 1.1-1.15 HP is what one wants per cubic inch ~~ 245 HP max but owners want the magic 300!

It will probably get worse till they discover just the perfect combination of rings and coatings.

Most of it has to do with US HIGH Sulfur fuel standards. Japan fixed this problem long ago US lags badly to save you a few pennies at the pump.

Saves owners $30-$50 per year and causes the damage........why it [oil burning varies by location]. My opinion!

3.5 liters is to big for a V6..........just as 5.6 liters is to big for a V8 if perfection is desired.........in this emission ruled world.

Direct injection might save us for a while til Hydrogen. But direct just increases the power stress ratio allowing up to 10% more power.
