Anyone else ever had this? I just recently noticed my navigation coming on in it's dark mode (usually the mode used at night since the unit can be excessively bright). It used to come up in whatever setting I last turned the car off but now it has been sporadically turning on dark when starting the car. Not sure what that would be and I'm 110% positive it wasn't turned off dark or that I hit a button as it came up.

Is it something worth getting looked at while under warranty for? Any chance there is some dumb, easy fix I'm missing?

It's a 2005 and the warranty is up in October...but I'm about to leave (Tuesday this week) and store it for a year so the timing is just perfect.

Are your lights turned on? Or in automode in which they turn on in your garage which would have the screen come up in dark mode?

Yes, lights are in auto mode. However, they have been in auto mode since the day I bought the car and it never previously did this. I'm not sure this is even an option on the 2005 Gs?

Also, yesterday it came on dark and it was light out (no headlights came on). I was confused when this first started a few weeks ago and watched closely to see if it was something I was doing but in watching closely, it seems like it is not a result of anything I'm doing...

I don't know about the 2005, only my 2008. I had exactly that occur and I don't know what initiated it. What fixed it was going back to the settings screen for the display and resetting all of the settings. I had to make sure that I was on the correct mode from the front panel first. That is setting daylight setting on the setup screen was not enough, had to make sure that I had it set on auto-daylight. I forget the exact sequence but it involved going to the setup screen and then pressing the button that you would push to reverse it manually until what you want is displayed.

Somehow everything was reversed in the settings even though it was working normally earlier. I wish the stupid thing followed the sensor instead of the headlights. By this I mean I normally turn my headlights on when it rains which in turn will dim the display which then forces you to reverse the nav display and set the dash to bright, etc. for daylight driving.

I will play in the settings. I'm thinking there is no auto-daylight feature on the 2005 (especially since it hasn't doen this for the majority of the last two years I have owned the car) but it may be worth it to see if there is a 'factory reset' of sorts.

Really confused on this one...especially since the problem occurs randomly.

Basically when I got the car I set all of this up. There was a setting for setting the normal display and another for the alternate one which was used for when the lights came on. If you turned the lights on during the day and didn't want the alternate display you hit the reverse button for the display.

This worked until a couple of months ago when the display settings seemed to reverse themselves.

Looking at the wiring for the 05 I see an illumnation signal input to the nav unit. Not enough time right now to try to decipher it but if you Nav has an alternate display when the headlights are on then that may be what controls it.

I did not know about the auto mode setting for the display on yours but on my 08 you went to the settings screen and selected display. Previously I just set up both modes. But when I went to do it to correct the issue, I noticed when you push the button that reverses the display that the top of the settings screen changed with it and said something like auto-daylight or auto-night as what was selected. I never noticed the text before.

on my 2005 g35x, I have noticed that during the day time, when driving under a bridge (for about 2 seconds), the nav will turn to night mode, but my headlights will not turn on (they are set to auto mode).

so I think that if there is a different sensor for the nav (as opposed to the one for the headlights), then I would try to find it and see if anything is blocking it. otherwise, it could be the wiring.

It maybe just one sensor but a different time period for the lights to be triggered. In my case they seem to operate at the same time. I drive under a bridge and the lights will come on. I have played with the sensitivity and while I can vary this a little bit for places like trees line areas it doesn't solve the issue with lights coming on under a bridge.

My other car has an auto feature as well and works much better as well as being much older.
