I have a 2004 G35 Coupe with a manual transmission and about 49,000 miles. A few months ago I started to have intermittent problems going from 1st to 2nd. At any RPM you could "feel" a slight gear mesh. I took it to the dealer for an oil change and had them check the problem, they found nothing wrong! But, just in case, I had them change the transmission fluid. Now, about 3,000 miles later, the problem has gotten worse; about every 3rd shift from 1st to 2nd. This only occurs at RPMs below approximately 2,500 and only going from 1st to 2nd. Down shifting is fine?

Any suggestions?

That would be a dying transmission. Very common with the Z/G's of the early years.

mine did that.. always grinded when going into 3rd. I took it to 2 dealerships and they couldn't find anything. They also told me it was my clutch, but i knew better. Finally the last one said it was the transmission (synchros is my theory) and fixed it for free under warranty... make sure it's before 60k!!!! They also put in a new clutch and flywheel free of labor charge

could be the same problem i am fixing right now the G has a "dual mass flywheel" that tends to come apart it is a 2 piece flywheel tht is "bonded" together mine finally got to the point where it seemed as if the gear was not fully engaged but the simplest thing to do is replace it with a solid flywheel i used a Jim Wolfe Tech clutch and solid flywheel to solve my problem

Yea, all my gears are good except from 4th to 5th, the 5th grinds bad no matter what RPM and when I'm just idleing it makes some noises, I called the infiniti dealer service center and they said that it could be the clutch or the sync, but they don't replace the sync, they replace the whole transmission, have yall found out what the problem could be?

ok if you are stopped can you shift into 5th or does it grind? does 5th pop out of gear? in first gear w/ clutch disengaged {pedal to floor} does clutch travel far before engaging? if not and clutch engages right off the floor chances are clutch not releasing. let me know these items along with vehical milage.

All my gears are fine but when I drive fast I go good through every gear except 4th. Say I start and 1 then shift 6500k, then 2, then 3, then it gets STUCK at 4th. The first time I did this I redlined because my 4th gear is messed up. I have 60k miles on it. When I drive normal I go through 4th gear easily. What should I do

I would like to know how the clutch feels and drives. I could never understand why they did this to the G35. If the aftermarket flywheel reacts better than the factory then maybe I shoud recommend aftermarket to solve some problems. I was under the inpression that the dual mass flywheel was necessary to counteract engine vibration or vibration during engagement. I have never liked the way the G35 clutch works. I drove a manual I30 and it drove like a dream.

The 6 speed trans is a very beefy unit. The only problem with it is since the gears, hubs, etc are so beefy they are also heavy. The job of the syncros is to speed up or slow down trans components so they will mesh easier. The later transmissions(I think 05 and newer) they changed the syncros from a 2 piece to a 3 piece syncro. That's why the ealier ones failed more often.

Remember when removing the trans if the shifter stick is removed from the bracket you MUST align the plate correctly. If not you won't throw 5th all the way and the 5th syncro won't last long.

Double clutching is a lost art along with revolution matching.

Why the new Z does the matching for you.
