I have a nice day of G maintenence planned for tomorrow including changing the differential oil. Surprisingly, when I checked the FSM and OM, I fould that the only recommended gear oil was 80W-90 GL-5. On my truck and the Q there is a chart showing lots of options depending on the ambient temperature. On those charts 75W-90 and 80W-90 were shown for the same ambient temp. range with a statement that "80W-90 is preferable for all ambient temperatures beflow 104F"

I checked at a few parts stores and couldn't find a full synthetic gear oil in 80W-90, only 75W-90. M1's site only shows 75W-90 and 75W-145. So does it matter? Should I take the M1 back and go with a conventional or conv/syn blend 80W-90?

Thanks!

Heath

stick with the Mobil 1, or upgrade to Redline.

Where might I find Redline? I looked at O'Reilly's, Advance Auto, Wal-Mart, etc - and didn't see anything except M1 and Royal Purple in a full synthetic - and all of them were 75W-90.

I just checked Amsoil's web site, and it appears that they have an 80W-90 available... just a matter of finding one of their dealers - hopefully willing to sell to me before tomorrow afternoon when I want to have the G in the air...

I just checked Redline's web site, and it appears that they only offer 75W-90 as well. I guess my real concern is if it's OK to use 75W-90 vs. the recommended 80W-90.

Well, I changed it today. Ended up using Valvoline Conventional 80W-90. I'm not sure why Infiniti was so specific in their choice of only that weight, but I didn't want to question it, at least while I'm under warranty.

I think I'll do one more drain/fill with conventional gear oil on my next oil change, and then switch to Amsoil synthetic (assuming I can get it reasonably easily and at a decent price) since it's the only 80W-90 synthetic that I have seen. I had a good bit of metal filings on the magnet and even suspended in the oil - which I hear is typical on the first drain/fill. I kind of wish I had changed it earlier instead of waiting to almost 30K

Why not just remove drain plug then refill using a length of clear tubing inserted in fill port with funnel attached at other end,or better yet refill with a suction gun?

w/differential still in vehicle how do u propose to elevate funnel above fill hole. deep south gravity is pesky. lol miti-vac pump=(suction gun)? what the hell is a suction gun if not a pump? not trying to be a wise arse just a twisted sense of humor.

simple to insert one end of a 4 foot piece of tubing into fill hole, and attach funnel to other end snaked thru wheelwell where you simply pour in the gear oil-start with 1.5 quarts which should take it to near correct level

Suction gun looks like a caulk gun--fill it with oil, insert tube in fill opening, push plunger to expel jis into differential

I always just used a net to collect my tropical fish, except when I had a tank full of 10-12" Piranhas, they would chew holes in it!

slurp guns are less traumatic to the fish. i no longer support the concept or myself w/the collection of tropical sales. where are those piranhas living today?

All 6 Piranha died when the 1 year old Perfecto 90 gallon tank leaked til dry while no-one was home{20 years ago}-destroyed floors on entire level of home, insurance covered floor-Perfecto replaced tank {parents were not keen on refilling new tank} sold the setup. They used to eat 100 goldfish/week,purchased for 5$ at pet shop as "feeder fish"!!!
