G35 coupe under car air splitter?

Hi All. New guy here. I have an '05 G35 coupe with the 19" wheels and stuff.

Ya know, there is this fancy bit of plastic under the car. I assume its designed to control the air flow under the car. Any idea how critical this big chunk of plastic is? Any problems with removing it and leaving it off?

I ask because the front of it is actually torn open allowing air to flow up into the engine compartment when the car is moving. I figure its either replace the stuff or get rid of it all together.

Else, I really love the thing. Wife's not too keen on the 17 mpg (city). But I keep point out that it has like 300 hp and that ought to make up for it

There are a few members here who actually removed that piece and have yet to experience any kind of problem.
