Hi!

Being used to have the sllllllow Camry I4, I always drove a car that was FWD. Now, with my new wonderful g35x, I was told that I will have to adjust my driving style.

For example, since I am driving in Canada, so there will be plenty of snow in the months to come, I was told to put the awd off while climbing a big hill in icy conditions since, apparently, when the awd will detect ice, it will reduce/stop the gas fuel in order to keep stability... which might end up leaving me stuck in the middle of the hill not being able to go on top of it. Is that true? Also, I was told to never stop pushing acceleration pedal when there is a heavy turn since the awd will stop trying to adjust wheels for stability, so if I slip, I might hit the wall.

Is there any advice you could give me on this? First, I would like to know if this is crappy advice, or if it is true!!!!

Sorry for these basic questions, it is the first time that I drive a REAL car since 1985!!! (got Chevettes, Corrollas and Camrys in the past!!)

Regards,

Daniel

The switch from FWD to AWD\RWD , can be difficult ... but you get used to it ...

heres a little FACT , The G35X has a Clutch Pack Coupling ( It acts like a RWD until the computer or switch tells it to engage the CPC)

It is somewhat truth that When the front wheels engage going up a hill , sometimes it will slip ... and Sometimes RWD vehicles DO go up a hill better than AWD and FWD.

AWD will help you get across loose soil \ Woods

And from what Ive seen \ Driven ,for some reason , AWD doesnt turn better than a RWD, more than likely because the front tires are pulling but during a turn the fronts lose traction trying to turn ( That is why Acura released the MDX )

The Final Outcome Of You Reading This! ...AWD is for well .. lose surfaces (The thing about the hill is semi true , my brothers Acura MDX gets up hills great ... 90% Tourqe to the front wheels most of the time -- but can go 70% to the rear)

From when he drives he always slows down a little and eases off the gas before a turn ... Depends on how fast your going , if your going threw a turn ... You basically ease off gas , get half way into the corner or apex then you apply gas .. which will stop you from spinning.

Be warned.. AWD drives tend to not turn as well as RWD While your on the gas so you have to learn to use the gas and brakes to increase your turning abilities.

-Edit-By releasing the MDX\RDX.. i meant SH-AWD ( Super Handling AWD ..)~Gimli~

I went thru last winter with my G35x without any problem. There is no switch. It is a smart AWD. I never even had to use the snow bottom located at the shifter. You'll have lots of fun. I drove a FWD before the G. Our G was made for this weather conditions. I strongly suggest to go out and play with your G once you see the first snow( I do that every year and with every car I own). Get in a big parking lot and have some fon and the mean time you learn how your car react. It is lot safer and easier drive thru our winter then FWD or RWD. Make sure you pick a well known parking lot. You don't want to hit any hidden curb or any other objects ubder the snow like my friend did.

The whole driving experience is different from the others.

All you have to do is enjoy you G all year around. Your car is an all season performance car!!!!!!!

Here is a little reading for you about the AWD FWD RWD

Good article Zozoka - thanks for the link. To be honest though I didn't understand several of the points they discussed. I need to re-read it a few times and look at the pics more closely perhaps. Also, I wonder how the new awd cars that are by default rear biased behave in comparison to these. For example, in the '07 G35x, my understanding is that it normally feels very similar to the regular G35, but when needed, the front wheels get traction, and this is confirmed by your comments above if I'm not mistaken.

So has anyone on this site tested a regular '07 G35 and an '07G35x one after the other, and if so, can you comment on how different they felt in normal dry weather?

Yes, that article is good for understand a basic. If you understand the basic between AWD, FWD aand RWD than you able to see why the infiniti ATTESA AWD so good. It benefits from both AWD and RWD. Based on RWD and using AWD only when needed.

I tried both of them several times. It was last November dry road and tried them several days later with snowy condition. On the dry road at the start it feels a little different( hard start) due to the AWD start. But than you hit the certain speed and feels the same.It only engages the AWD when you needed it. In winter I don't think I have to tell you. The dealership had one RWD with snow tires and the AWD with all season tires. What a huge different. I actually went in the parking lot that time with the dealer to hit some ice patches. Wow, I scared a sh.t out of the dealer. He did not know if I can handle the car. He figured out the hard way. Hit the ice just a small one but hit it I corrected it but He almost put his pants full. On the other hands we went out with the AWD hit the same ice. No slipage at all only hit it with one wheel it corrects it so fast you can here and feel switching. The system is a genius. I played so much last winter with the car. Only time when the computer is comfused when you turn say left and the road is tilting from horizontal to the outside and there is a pothole or just the gravel is bad in a patch. You can feel the car is thinking a little too much. I only know 1 corner in my city like that. I tried that corner couple of times it does the same every time. But when there is no snow or ice. It corrects it really fast most of the people won't even feel it. This winter should be a bit different for me. Last winter I had brand new tires. This winter I have little worn set. It should make a huge different on the handling. Also we know how sensitive the brake and the gas. Anyways I tried at the parking lot first I hit the brake at the speed of 40 and let the steering wheel go. It stopped straight no side pull. I know it was a brand new car. I am looking forward to see this winter.

To tell you honestly most people wont feel the diffent between our AWD or RWD with normal driving. If you push your car hard then you can feel the different at the start from the dead stop for a little and sometimes if you take the corner too hard.

Anyways that is my experience so far with the car.

Thanks for the additional info my friend!!

Have you tried to go up a hill when icy or with lots of snow? Did you have to disengage AWD or we do not have to worry and leave it there?, i.e. no problem to climb hills in any condition?

Yes, I did try it. But our hills here at least this part of Ontario not that big. I never had to worry about it. I'll go up north this winter for skiing. I am looking forward. Maybe if you start from dead stop on uphill you should turn on the snow bottom that's all you have to do I think.
