Sorry you didnt get a response, not sure why no one chimed in.
Anyway, the FX uses the RE5R05A in all of them. It uses the 92x20 in the FX35 RWD, 92x21 in the AWD 35, and 92x22 in the 45...
The FX uses the following gear ratios
1st 3.5402nd 2.2643rd 1.4714th 1.0005th 0.834Reverse 2.370
the G35 uses the RE5R05A 92X62
Gear ratios
1st 3.5402nd 2.2643rd 1.4714th 1.0005th 0.834Reverse 2.370
so technically they are the same trans, but im not sure what the 92x(xx) means, because in other nissan transmissions it means different gear ratios. For instance, the RE4R03A is used in the Infiniti Q45, Nissan Pathfinder/QX4, and in the 300ZX... Yet, it has SLIGHTLY different gear ratios in each one...
If it were a heavier duty transmission something else would indicate that, but nothign I can see would indicate that..
So, my final verdict is that yes, they are interchangeable. The difference in towing capacity is probably that the frame on the G35 was not designed to handle the extra weight like the FX was... Thats usually why unibody cars have low towing capacity, because it will exceed the GVCW....
There was an article in a boating magazine about a guy who tows his 4000lb boat/trailer a few miles with his cadillac CTS yet it only has a 1000lb rating... he said it does it without problem, and hes not experienced any issues....
The main problem they (the magazine editors) thought was that it exceeds the GVCW, thus the systems werent designed to do handle it. In the case of the FX, its possible its got a little extra transmission cooling (maybe a twin heat exchanger vs a single one, just a wild guess though)... My verdict is that it probably is the frame and towing more than 1000lbs could cause a distortion in the frame.
