The air in my G35 will just turn on at random and will not turn off. When it switches on the display swutched to "autoair" from "manual" and the radio display goes black, I can still controll the radio from the steering wheel controlls. If I hit the dash hard enough it will switch off.

Went to the dealer and they said it would be $1k to fix, basically replacing the entire control panel.

Any ideas??

IIRC, your head unit is dying. The stereo and AC is all tied together.

This Happened to me the other day.. I turned the car off and turned it back on and then it was fine!

Should I take this into the Dealer?

Is this a 2003? I would look for a replacement unit at a salvage yard. I'll bet you can get the unit for a small fraction of what the dealer wants for it. Any electrical repair shop can swap the units!

What part should I be looking for? In the above part of the thread it's referred to as a head unit.

My suggestion would be to call some local salvage yards near you and ask if they have an 03 with good dash parts. Then make sure the car has the same options you do, especially dual zone controls or not, navigation etc. Make sure the salvage car is not a flooder or a burner and even check it out before you have them remove the part. I checked http://www.car-part.com and I believe they call it a heater/AC control unit, but I'm not sure. Steve the Tech may be able to give you some additional insight.

I own a 2003 G35 Coupe and I also had problems with my air conditioner and radio as others have described. I took my car to John Huang at XW Electric Co. in El Monte California. He charged me $200 and completed the repair in approximately 45 minutes. He can be reached at (626) 757-0465, 3608 Arden Dr. Suite J, El Monte, CA.
