Did you check all the fuses and fusible links?

So you hear it trying to start? Based on my experiences with my Mazda 929, it was timing belts for me whenever things like this happened.

When it was -completely- dead, not even attempting to turn over, it turned out to be fusible links.

Please if you don't know a particular engine your comments may confuse owners. The G20 has a timing chain as does even the lowly 2.4..........only the J30 has a timing belt.

Comparing a Ford Madza 929 engine........please.

The 2nd-gen (mine was 1988) base-model Mazda 929 was pre-ford, 3.0L 24V SOHC V6. The 929 -never- used a Ford engine. The entire car was Mazda engineered and manufactured overseas (a true Japanese import!).

Mazda uses Ford engines in the 93-2002 i4 626 (but not the V6) and the V6 version of the new Mazda 6.

Whether its a belt or a chain, the symptom points to it. $600 is possible, considering how labor intensive the process is.

Most chains have 100,000 mile service intervals. People never consider replacing them as part of long-term maintenance.

Try checking out G20.net, there's a huge amount of G stuff there.
