Post

I have two crappy sound clips here taken from my cell phone while driving my G/F's '96 Sunfire.

The car sounds like an electric RC car when she drives, especially when she has the wheel cut, and accelerates. Could it be the Power steering?

I have attached the clips, hopefully someone can help me out here.

While driving along straight it isn't very bad, but if you take a turn, you can really hear it. If you are at a stop and accelerate with the wheel turned (i.e. turn left at a light) it sounds the worst. I'm not that familiar with cars in general, but it sounded to me like it may be something with the power steering, or something that it connected to the driveshaft up there???

On a Side Note, you can hear the keys shaking around a good bit in the clips, but the original winding noise is what I am talking about...

I guess someone has to tell me how to post sound clips here first???Sorry.... If someone tells me how to do this I'll post right away.....Thanks

Have to host via photobucket or some other source. It does sound like a p/s issue though. GMs like to leak p/s fluid.

Yeah I tried, but PhotoBucket won't upload .wav files. I'll try to find somewhere else to host, but for now I'm studying for an exam tomo, so I might have to wait until tomo night. Thanks for the help.

Email them to me and I'll host them for you (email's in my profile).

Does sound like it could be power steering, though. Check the fluid levels. If you have the car running but parked and turn (steer) the wheels, the noise should get louder while steering. If it doesn't, it's probably not power steering.

Thanks for the offer to host them,

I have attached two of the clips to an e-mail. They are not very good quality, they were taken while taking two left turns at lights from my cell phone. You can hear the keys shaking around a good bit in the clips, but there is a winding sound, which is what I am talking about. If these are of no help, I guess I'll try to take some better ones tomorrow or Thursday.....

Hmmm...Doesn't look like I got it for some reason.

If you have Windows Movie maker, there's an easy way to upload the sound clips.

Open movie maker, import the audio files, put them as the audio track, then use an image (anything...even solid black/white/whatever) in the video track. Then you can upload to youtube.

Alright, here is the Photobucket link to a short video I made for the clips. Remember these are quick clips that were taken from my cell phone while taking two left turns at lights, so they may not be of the best quality. You can hear the keys shaking around a good bit in the clips, but there is a winding sound, which is what I am talking about. Thanks for the help guys......

Sounds like a mechanical whine to me.

CV joints, maybe?
