Not sure what you are asking.......the AWD is 4wd, well technically it is AWD.

Yes, if you turn the AWD lock on, it locks the AWD on until you hit I believe 30mph, it then turns off unless wheel slippage is detected.

Thank you very much, we will purchase the FX 35 for my wife, she is used to the pathy 4x4 and we were wondering how the awd works compared to the 4x4 of the pathy, have 233k miles on the finder and still is a great daily driver, and thanks again for the info.

Actually the AWD button only came on the 03's. From 04 up it came with a snow mode button which seemingly only reduces throttle. I cannot verify anywhere with either regular owner's manual or FSM that it locks the AWD. And it does not provide the same hopping rear tires on hard turns that you get with say a Titan with the diff locked. The way the AWD works in the FX is it is "intelligent" It stays in a 50/50 split up to 18MPH and then it goes to 100% rear. From here, if it senses slippage, it'll feed power back to the front wheels up to 50% depending on the circumstances. The car is plenty capable in snow. I've driven with the crappy Goodyear RSA tires through a foot or more of snow up hills without a problem this winter. Only once did I even bother using the snow mode because I was on a narrow hill sliding around with cars coming down toward me and I was having trouble modulating the throttle and torque from the V8
