just thinkin and wondering, got a few questions. are all the mounts and stuff the same for FWD and RWD CA18D-motors? also do the RWD CA18DEs have the crank girdle? are the US spec pulsar CA18DE motors the same as the RWD ones? FWD DETs have that funky RB-style intake mani, what other kinds had that? do the funky ones interchange with the normal intakes? I dont expect much but about how much power does a bolt-on tuned DE(na) make assuming intake, header, muffler and maybe some cams?

sorry for all the pointless questions but I was thinking of raiding the local junkyards for parts(toys). and its more fun to play with stuff that might one day be usefull. thanks

nope...you'll need a rwd engine to pull mounts and mounting brackets off of...

i really don't know...the only rwd ca18de's would be out of a q's silvia so you couldn't get a hold of one anyways!

basically yes...you can use a fwd ca18de motor on a rwd transmission (with rwd manifolds and mounts) it thats what you're getting at...

Quote »FWD DETs have that funky RB-style intake mani, what other kinds had that? [/quote]

some of the ca18et (USDM)manifolds went over the top i think...as did some of the early non-intercooled ca18det's(JDM)

yes you can use the normal intake manifold in place of the funky ones...they all use the 8 port intake valves...

TheMadScientist on this board had a tuned n/a ca18det in his silvia(in japan :D) that was making upwards of 200...with cams, cam gears, high comp pistons, headers, and other really really expensive things! you won't make much (if any more) than a stock KA with those mods...the n/a pulsars made i think 135 or so :(

just try searching...i know i started a thread about n/a ca18de's not too long ago!

much thanks! I tryed searching but all i got was a thread about ET->DET head swap. ca16 heads and 6bolt cranks abound. the more I learn about this motor the more it seems like the honda B series but stronger and more complicated. I am looking forward to working on them, so much so that I want some stuff to work on untill I get my clip. so the block is the same on RWD-FWD ca18. now how about the mounts on RWD CAs, for s12s and such?could you use S12 mounts on FWD CA18DE motor with S12 turbo bellhousing/transmission? heres a real question: sence the CA, KA, SR trannys are essentially the same just defferent bellhousings would the S15 transmission work on a CA? but the speed sensor moved to the diff right? so s15 transmission and diff I guess? what driveshaft would you need? seems like the narrow torque band and high revving nature of the CA might benifit from a tight geared 6 speed gearbox.

Akai, that is a darn good idea, and I like it, but you can't just move the speed sensor. You MIGHT be able to tear out the inside gear assembly of the S15 transmission, but I HIGHLY doubt. It's too bad, because I totally agree with you, the CA would do very nicely with a close ratio transmission. I plan on raising my diff gearing to help that rev happy little motor out.

block's the same with no crank girdle on the bottom...so i guess its somewhat weaker in that respect.

don't know much about SR's but i think the bellhousing/transmission combo of the s15 is unique...in that i mean you can't use an s15 transmission with any other bell housing...the s15 SR transmission bolts up to other generation SR's but you can't use it on say a KA or a CA...if it does for some reason work...you'd need the s15 transmission and diff...and probably a custom driveshaft too! (not worth the time/effort or money IMO)

don't really know if a rwd s12 engine mount would work...i'd assume it does seeing that the s13 rwd ca18det bolts right in to an s12 (right?)

sorry don't know anything about honduh engines either...but yeah i'd say the CA is stronger!:D

that transmission is very cool I am quite enamoured with it. very nice action, short throws, solid feel. same transmission as the new rx-8 and i have heard the altezza also uses it. might be worth it. theres a place around here that builds aluminum custom driveshafts for like 500-700 bucks. the real whopper is the transmission itself. like $4k.Ill give honda props for making some good NA engines. not to say that it couldnt be done better. die cast aluminum blocks will never measure up to sand cast iron. not without massive modification. can the crank girdle be removed from one engine and used on another? Ive never seen one but TMS made it seem possible to put one on a CA20 in the other post. if itll work on the CA20 then itll work on a 18DE I would assume. the piston oilers? Iguess this means underpistonoilsquerters? them too?

very educational!

OMG TMS has a HNR32! lucky jerk! I love GTS-4's

Is there any differance in the blocks of the FWD and RWD det's? DO they have squirters and all that stuff?

(he would be the one to ask...he's the only fwd ca18det that's on here alot!)
