There is a possibility that the VTC gear on my s14 sr is going out. I don't have the money at the moment to buy a brand new one, and even if I did I'm not entirely sure that that is what the problem is. I read somewhere that you can put an s13 sr intake cam gear in and eliminate the VTC, although that will affect you low end power. I also read that the intake cam gear from the FWD SR's out of the sentras and g20s will fit the s13 sr, meaning they should be able to work for what I need it for. I'm not worried about the power loss as this will only be a temporary solution until I can get another VTC gear. I already have the FWD SR cam gear, but I wanted to make sure before throwing it on. Thanks!

What makes you think it's going out. Could be a dumb question seeing as I have an s13 Sr.

Generally the VVT sprocket will make a rattling noise, but it's not usually the sprocket that goes out, it's usually the oil feed solenoid that does.

^This

I just rebuilt my motor and when I started it for the first time since the rebuild it had a sort of knocking sound. After looking around and watching videos, the vvt sound is the closest thing to it. While I haven't fully eliminated rod knock out as a possibility, I have a good feeling that it lies somewhere around the vvt.

With that said, Seishuku, do you by chance know how to check the solenoid, or is it a put a new one and and see if it fixes it type deal?

If I recall, you just disconnected it, if it stops, then it's the solenoid.

So does anyone have a definite answer as to whether I can use the gear or not? After letting the motor warm up the sound goes away for the most part. I took a quick video or cold and warm start.

Erm... Hate to say this, but that doesn't sound like the VTC rattle.
To me, that sounds like something a lot worse... Though not rod knock, that would go away as you rev.

It doesn't sound good though.

Could be a worn out chain guide, or something along those lines.

You might have to get a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint where the noise is coming from exactly.

I'm fairly sure it's not the VTC sprocket though, it's rattle is more like a literal rattling noise. Unless it failed in an unusual way, but I still don't think that's it.

However, I'm 80% sure a FWD intake sprocket will work.

Got a stethoscope and found that the sound is definitely coming from the head between the front and mid section, but I couldn't really pinpoint it from there. I did find out that the sound completely goes away at 2500-3000 rpm constant, if that means anything. Im going to pop the valve cover off here shortly and see if I can see anything, maybe start it for a minute and see.

Wasn't the VTC gear. Had someone look at it and we're pretty sure it's a lifter. New lifters are on the way

Will do, and I'm probably going to try to sell the gear to recoup some of the money

I know you've alrady potentially discovered the issue, but to answer your initial questions YES you can use any any FWD gear on any RWD engine :D Obviously you need to keep intake gears on the intake side, and exhaust on the exhaust, but they are interchangable. S13 Redtop cam gears can be adopted to the S14 engine as well.

With that considered, you will also need the cam gear bolt as well, as it's much shorter.

any idea if any S13 SR or FWD USDM SR cam shaft can be used with the VTC cam gearin an s14 SR? I broke my cams pin by over torquing the cam gear bolt with a bad torque wrench. According to BC web page the S13 cams have better lift and duration. so in my mind this would be a minimal gain and easy'er to find part with out dropping $300+ and 264 cams.

Will not work, there is an oil port in the intake cam that goes to the sprocket if I remember right.
