FWD offset explanation...

ok why exactly are FWD offsets higher (40+)?? btw i know how offsets work and everything, ive just always wondered about this (IE what is the purpose??)

Keeps wheel bearings in better shape over the lenght of the cars life. It's also stronger from a structure standpoint. Higher offset wheels also weigh marginally less, and thus require less material to make.

Basically it's a win win situation for automakers.

because instead of having the transmission going lengthwise with the car, and having the diff + axles out back, everything is in the enginebay, and as such, the hub mounting surface is pushed farther out, thus requiring a higher offset.
