i have been reading this site up and down about RB swaps in the 240. next year i want to do a swap so i figured i would start doing my homework now. after reading i have come up with some questions. i really would like to do a RB26 swap but i am curious as to why if i do that swap i should expect to spend another 8k to do it like the one sticky said? i am also toying around with the idea of going with the RB25 but how much can the stock internals take on that engine. i want to get around 500RWHP if possible without getting all forged goodies.

thats all i can think of right now but i am sure more will arise as these are answered.

Great job reading the stickies. The RB is a great engine but it is pricey. 500 whp on stock internals should be possible considering the SR20 can do the same. Welcome to

yea but i dont understand y an RB swap is so expensive $2500 for a motor (rb25), driveshaft $550, downpipe $240 i also heard that you dont need the mounts from mckinney but i will throw that in just incase $625. thats only a little over 3.5k so what else am i missing

Check out the how much threads. You see it is the little things that make it add up. Oil pump, water pump, belts, plugs, radiator, intercooler, etc..

stock internals on rb26 is suppose to go up to 600hp wit no internal modsstock internals on rb25 is suppose to be up to 500hpfyi this is just stuff i read.

you want 500? then u need new turbos for rb26 b/c of the turbine materiali read it can only do 1.2 bar max and will explode after.

read about crank snout issuenew driveshaftcustom downpipes

the more you get the more it costs and honestly the quotes kamin gave sound pretty realistic but it really depends on how you wanna do it. by the way the price he gave was for basic swap i believe with minor maintenance things replaced.

good luck tho

Yup, things add up, especially if you want the car to be reliable.

Fuel pump, maybe a fuel pressure regulator as well

A new radiator depending on the condition of the one you have.

Electric fan (s)

timing belt

new clutch

re-surface the flywheel

Maybe a Maf, clutch slave cylinder, Intercooler and piping, if it dosent come with the engine

Air filter

oil for transmission and engine

oil filter

300zx tt fuel filter

Spark plugs

ETC. .

The thing about it is, youll spend a little at a time and it wont seem like your spending much on the car, but if you sit down and add all the little bits and pieces youll see what happens.

$550 for a driveshaft? is it aluminum?

If your on a tight budget, dont buy ANYTHING from mckinney. IMO All their stuff is over priced.

Tophat sells motor mounts manufactured by a company called Core. If you want a steel driveshaft, a local shop will charge alot less, you just have to give them the measurements.

The measurements will depend on which motormounts you use.

You really need to do more research on the swap if you have to ask who besides McKinney makes mounts. That's like asking, "who else makes computers besides Apple?" Ten seconds on google and you would know.

Also, if you've truly been reading this site up and down, there are about a dozen threads repeatedly listing all of the reasons why the RB26 is a more expensive swap than the RB25.

The RB swaps take more effort and attention to detail then that. The RB25 will not last very long on stock internals at 500hp. If you're serious about a 500+hp RB25, then you seriously better have $12,000-15,000 to blow, and that's a bare-bones minimum.

If you're on a tight budget, don't bother. No matter who wants to argue it, RB and budget do not belong in the same sentence.

The stickies are just the tip of the ice berg. They hardly tell you anything about the details of the swap you are "doing your homework for." There are currently 2188 threads in the RB section right now so start reading those and taking notes. I'm sure you'll stumble across 5 good solid threads where Kamin and others put the smack down on some unsuspecting new guy for asking in a nasally voice, "why does the RB26 swap cost so much more?"
