Futurama Returns Because It "Was Too Good to Die"
By Natalie Abrams Wed Jun 23, 8:01 PM PDT

In what may be the most anticipated animated return to television since Family Guy, Futurama finally debuts brand new episodes on Comedy Central (Thursday, 10/9c).

"In my heart of hearts, I knew this show was too good to die," says Billy West, who actually sounds like an older version of Fry, the character he voices on the animated series.

"The amount of times the show has been revived from the dead is unbelievable. I love working on zombie Futurama," jokes John DiMaggio, who plays Bender.

There was a moment, though, when it seemed Futurama would be up-ended after a salary negotiation snag last summer. Fortunately, the core cast is returning, and Katey Sagal insists it was "just one of those things that happen" in Hollywood.

"The show has been consistently intelligent and funny. To me it's always been one of the best-written shows that I've ever been on," says Sagal, who quickly corrects herself, laughing, "besides Sons of Anarchy."

Sagal and Lauren Tom both say they had to listen to recordings of Leela and Amy Wong to get the right pitch again. But it seems the characters haven't missed a step. Fry and Leela are still "knocking about," says Sagal, while West notes that Fry and Bender continue to be a solid comedy team.

However, this season won't just be about taking potshots at pop culture in the 21st century. "There's a bigger emotional core than ever there was in a season," insists Maurice LeMarche, who voices such characters as Kif, Calculon and Hedonism Bot. "This season we have more shows that may leave you with a little tear in your eye or make you say, 'Wow, that show really said something.'"

The Futurama looks bright as Comedy Central revives 'toon

That's not to say they won't go after films such as Avatar, and of course, take on Comedy Central itself. The animated series had been known to take a shot at Fox now and again, though LaMarche says, "we don't bite the hand that feeds us, we nibble it lovingly."

And just because Futurama has moved to cable, that doesn't mean the show is turning X-rated. "We're not trying to push it to the extreme because I definitely want it to feel like it's the same show," says executive producer David X. Cohen. "We'll push it somewhat, but there's a self-imposed line we could cross."

Its amusing some of the time. The only character I really like though is bender. I'm not a huge fan of the rest of the team.

I love the characters and their interactions. Dr Zoidberg is my favorite. The science fiction theme draws in a particular crowd, but I enjoy it despite not being a sci fi fan.

That first episode went all kinds of nowhere lol. I am entertained, confused, and tickled in some places I didn't knew existed in my brain.

Because it's really not funny, futurama is very dry boring humor,I'm in the same boat I've watched a few episodes and don't find it even remotely funny.

Just because you aren't smart enough to get it does not mean the show sucks.

Oh, sorry it's not Family Guy! Wait... Family Guy isn't funny, it's stupid. You're stupid, so I bet you like Family Guy.

The reborn episode wasn't great but the other episode cracked me up especially when Zapp Brannigan started to say what really happened.

Futurama is great you F-tard. You know one of my other friends says that Family Guy is not funny either. I dont get it. Its not HAHA funny but cleverly f***ing funny.. Its rated one of the best shows for a reason. Wasnt it nominated for an Oscar or something last year?

I love Family Guy because when its bad, it knows it, and it indulges in its awfulness. And when its good, its epic.

Futurama is somewhat cerebral, but it grows on you. The characters are likeable.

Family Guy is not clever. It's meta humor at best, wrapped in non sequiturs because a plot would be too hard for it's audience to follow .

Also, the Oscar isn't exactly a shining standard anymore. Want to know an Oscar winner?

That huge piece of s*** won the whole damn thing last year.

That's beside the point, though, the Oscars are pretty much exclusive to films.

And Family Guy has won 3 Emmy Awards. South Park; 4. The short-run thread subject; 3. Of course, the surprisingly funny again Simpsons has won 25 and been nominated 58 times.

I much more enjoyed the Hurt Locker than Dances with Ferngully in Arabia.

the acting was WAY better.

also, Family Guy was just revolving pop culture references for a out 5 years.

the first two seasons where the only ones that didn't really get on my nerves.

Subtle little gags like this one are what make Futurama awesome:

"Oops."

Family Guy is effing stupid. It's great for one-liners and short youtube clips, but sitting through entire episodes is torture. And most of its "best" bits are just recycled internet memes delivered a few weeks late.

The problem with Futurama is that its sometimes too self-indulgent. The jokes occasionally consist of inside jokes within inside jokes that only a handful of fans watching intently will understand -- the movie, for example. It has that icky feeling like I've accidentally walked into a Renaissance Fair or Star Trek convention, and all I want to do is leave and hope no one saw me there.

The best episodes involve Fry reflecting on his past and adjusting to the present, or when the show examines how the future would look at things from our era.

Pretty damn clever writing.

My flavor of comedy, however, goes after social norms and institutions. This is why Family Guy is really good when its good, and its why The Simpsons, All In The Family, and Married With Children were huge hits. All of the ideals that television programs aspired to were turned upside down.
