Ok so today I fired up the Z for the first time in a couple months. I got tired of trying to trace down a phantom problem a few months ago, so I covered the car and forgot about it, shameful I know.
Anyway, I noticed a couple things after driving it for 30 min. It likes to surge at idle and almost die. I still has a problem where after its warmed up and you push the clutch in at any speed above 45 MPH, the car comes down in RPM and simply dies, no sputter, no hickup, just comes down in RPM all the way to 0 as if you shut off the key. It will of course start right backup and run, but this problem could prove deadly in rush hour traffic, so I want to knock it out.
What I have done so far:
Cleaned all injector wiring harnesses. Checked all coil pack resistance. Replaced all plugs. Replaced both O2 sensors. Ran 3 can of fuel injector cleaner and 3 tanks of quality 93 octance fuel (no ethanol) through it.
Now I do have both a IACV valve and Idle air control valve I snagged off Ebay to test with, but I haven't had the desire to tear 1/2 the crap off the rear of the engine to replace the two valves (which I will do if someone thinks they might be faulty). I also have the ConZult software from Blitz and Nissan Data Scan on my laptop to test the car with. I cannot get a reliable load balance test to come back as each time a different, or a couple different cylinders come back bad, and never the same ones.
Another thought; the power steering pump is going bad and sounds to be putting a more than normal strain on the engine. Could this bad pump be the cause of any of this, the surging for example? I have a reman pump to put on, but again haven't had the desire to do so.
Tear this apart guys and give me some idea where to start pokin around? The Z is for sale, and as much as I do like the car, these problems, if not reasonably easy to fix, will result in it going for parts. Any idea is helpful and appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
