first off, let me give you some background information...
we (my dad and i) were making the intercooler piping for my fmic and the intake piping over the break, and we needed to have some tube stubs welded onto the piping for vacuum lines and stuff, so i went to some places to try and get it done. this was on a saturday, so the good muffler shops and welding places were closed. i ended up going to midas, where this glorious piece of white trash happily agreed to weld my bov flange and a tube stub to some pipes. i figured, "hey, he works at a muffler shop, he's probably awesome at this". first thing he does is go get an oxy-acetaline torch and im thinking "oh god... what is he going to do with my stuff?!?!!". he then proceeded to take the torch and melt off the bov flange from the original piping. then he just took it to the next level by proceeding to hold the flange and melt a hole around it with the torch. after doing this he somehow manages to melt the flange onto the pipe with an almost perfect circle through to the inside of the pipe from the flange, exactly the size of the inside of the flange. he did all this while smoking a cigarette to the filter without using his hands. it was beautiful. he then did the same for the other pipe i needed, though he did a much crappier job (probably because he wasnt smoking). i was somewhat disappointed/worried/amazed when i left, but i figured "oh well, it didnt cost anything".
my dad saw these things when i got home and broke into hysterics. said it was by far the worst attempt at welding he had ever seen. to this i replied that they werent welds but melts. the dude didnt have a welder.my dad was very sceptical, but the bov flange didnt leak, and there was only one small hole in the other "weld". at this point i left to go back to auburn.
(this part is as told by my mom, who is the sole witness to this priceless event)my dad did a perfect job at brazing the hole in the "weld" around the stub on the other pipe, and flushed with success, he went to clean up the inside of the pipe with the bov flange on it. he spent several hours sanding down the bumps and stuff left on the inside of the "weld". when he was done he checked it for leaks; there were none. he then painted the pipe and got ready to put it on. after shoehorning it in place, he proceeded to put on the bov itself. he was tightening the last bolt on the bov, and the flange freaking BROKE OFF in his hand. my dad said he just sort of looked at it for a few minutes, then he said he just about cried. after spending the whole day making the pipe perfect, the damn thing broke off in his hand. this was last week, my dad hasnt worked on my car since.
