funny sould out of manifold

so i'm going head-to-head with another s13, when at about 5000 rpms i hear this akward sound. i've pretty much gotten used to hearing funny sounds, but it doesn't take long before one learns that funny sounds=SOMETHING F***ED UP.when i first did my t28 turbo swap, i had the entire exhaust system taken off. the sound from the turbo elbow is loud and not "smooth" like at the end of a tailpipe.anyway, i'm driving and pushing my car really hard, and suddenly the sound sarts. there was no bang, or ping, or anything else that at the time indicating something had fallen off or come undone.

my idle is the same, but i have a lot less power and boost doesn't kick up until about 4000 rpms, lots of throttle.

i put in a new manifold a week or so ago and everything seemed fine. putting the new manifold on required me taking out the turbo (wanted to anyway), so those being the last components i touched, i feel pretty good about my theory: big-a** exhaust leak near turbo.also, i can smell the exhaust near the turbo as well; fairly rich.

does anyone have any ideas? i'm going to check in the morning, but i thought i'd put a feeler out there. maybe somebody knows something i don't? i don't know if a new gasket can foul and cause a leak.. like it was blown.
