Ok, before i start tearing into my motor and mess things up more than they are, can someone hlep me with some odd noises coming from the engine. the first is a rattling noise. i dont know if its coming from a pulley, but it kinda sounds like its coming from the front of the valve cover. when i rev, its gets louder. also, when i rev real high, i can hear a pulley screeching. i was thinking it was the power steering belt and pulley, but im not sure. also, my car creaks when i turn right. i checked the power steering fluid and its good. so my last question is, do i need to drain the oil if i take off the valve cover, or just let the car sit for a while? thanks for the help, who ever can respond.

You don't need to drain the oil to take off the valve cover, just wait until the engine's cold and it will have dripped off.

Rattling from front of engine is the timing chain, 80% of the time. Welcome to the club.

Creaking from turning to the right could be many things - improperly seated spring, blown strut, bad ball joint. Power steering pumps typically make a noisy whine or grinding sound if they're going bad, and it's hard to miss, as it only happens when you turn the wheel at low speed.

Yeah, power steering belts will squeel in a turn if they ar going. Bad ball joints creak, TC rod bushings creak, etc. My best bet has always been to get under the car and tug at things till I re-create the sound, but this doesn't work for power steering components.

cool. thanks guys. i'll probably check that stuff out this weekend. i did notice that when i put a little air in the tires, the creaking lessened. can someone give me a estimate on cost to replace those parts, or should i just go with after market stuff?

Replace which parts? We covered a lot of ground there, everything from timing chain to PS pump to TC rods and springs. :)

haha, oops. ok, i know what springs im going with, gonna replace those anyway. but for TC rods and ball joints, what would be better to use, i.e. companies. and as for the timing chain guides, what am i looking at price wise to fix that? or can i go to a junk yard and get a new one off a donor car.

I just did my t/c rod bushings. They are Whiteline and i got em from pdm racing. ran me about 50 bucks after shipping. Timing chain kit is about $250 i believe and you can get em from http://www.courtesyparts.com . Most likely you wouldnt want the guides from a junked 240 as those will probably be bad also-assuming the engine had high mileage.

The kit that Courtesy Nissan sells is the COMPLETE kit. That means sprockets, chain, guides, water pump, belts, sealent, the whole nine. Everything you could possibly need to make that entire area brand-spanking new and good for another 100k miles.

You could go on the cheap side and just do the guides, chain and sprockets and save a few $$.

Getting the CA and putting it in will be over 10 times the cost of a KA timing chain kit when all is said and done. The motor may only cost about $2k, but shipping, a new clutch, other new parts, MORE other new parts, will all add up to the bottom line. Not to dissaude you or anything, just to put things in perspective. If you have a '91 the SR would probably be an easier swap, just FYI.
