I bought my 95 240 in march this year and it had a funny squeaking sound coming from the driveshaft/differential area only when accelerating. If you just cruise in gear no sound would be heard. I alsways thought it was some bearings going bad...the noise would go away and come back. Last week i took my car to Mt. Washington here in the eastcoast and it really made it worse. No the car has a constant 'ssshhhhh' sound while in gear. Also when you reverse a clunking noise is heard from the rear end. After reversing it will make the clunking sound in forward gears for a little and go away. Later on this week i will be pulling my transmission to replace the clutch...i need advice on what to look for in the drive shaft and rear end while im under the car.thanks

well the clunking sound to me seems like the differential is low on oil...when i bought my car it mad a horrible clunking noise while driving but i think it was all out of differential fluid completely or close to it..so maybe yours is just low..i say try that first and see what happens and if the sound is still there after that i would check into your wheel bearings

So the clunking sound was the ebrake cables came off the clips and were hitting the weights on the driveshaft. Has this happened to anyone?

the clips were bent and the cables were jst chillen on top of the drive shaft...the rubber around the cable was completely warn off.

Whats a good way of getting the pilot bearing out?

well obviously you have to take off the transmission to get to it...the only way i know of is to buy a tool to take it out its a type of puller you can get it from your local auto parts store..the only trick ive heard of is to pack the pilot bearing with grease and then tap it with a stick and hammer but i dont know if this works
