definately...where at in houston...im in the southwest....anyways heres my update so far...

today went suprisingly smooth...took everything off and replaced the knock sensor and nock sensor harness...swapped out exhaust cams and also swapped out the injectors...all thats left is the 2 intake cams and timing belt and then the hard stuff starts....putting it back together....having problems with the intake cams though because there are pins in the end of them that needs to be swapped to the new cams...we havent figured out how to get them out...as you can see from the pics we used ziplock bags, colored zip ties, and colored elctrical tape to keep everything organized...we started at 9:30 AM and finished around 7:15 PM...today went good...lets hope everything continues to run as smoothly...well enough rambling heres the pics...

thus concludes day 1

I didn't see any pictures of the knock sensor. You said you did already replcae it? You didn't have to remove the lower intake manifold?

ok so day runs around...we had trouble switching the pins out of the old intake cams into the new ones but finally got those done and the valve covers put back in....the rest of the day we spent trying to get the timing belt back on...it seems there was a little bolt at some time in the auto tensioner that keeps pressure on it so you can get the belt on right...well it was missing so i went to like 4 different parts stores and then finally a home depot...after that it was basically line up the timing marks and put the belt and timing belt covers on...we quit early because we were so stressed out from the belt issues...i left the camera over there but ill be sure to put the pics up 2morrow...all we have left is all the accessory belts and pulleys, the upper intake, and radiator...oh and who could forget all those little vacuum lines and connectors...well see how tomorrow goes

finished day 4...i keep forgetting the camera over there but ill upload everything asap...yesterday we had trouble with the timing belt.....this morning got the upper intake on only to remove it 2 more times...first we broke the injector mount...then stripped the screw in the mount...lastly we were leaking but thats bc my dumb@$$ forgot to put the new orings on the injectors before we installed them...finally fixed that problem as well as drove around 4ever looking for parts(the injector mounts and belts to match up with how my pulleys are running now)i can truly say that there is NO other j30 quite like mine....we got everything on and were able to get it started...it sounds mean...ive got a vid ill upload too...now we only have 2 things left...install a new relay for my electric fan and flamp a coolant hose on the back of the motor that my buddy skipped over on accident....other then that were good to go...

anyone know anything about breaking in cams....i doubt the injectors need to be broken in but the cams i figured would be...i got lucky because they were unable to regrind my cores so they sent me billet cams instead...gotta love Jim Wolf and theyre customer service...turnaround time on the cams and ecu was only 8 days...well im going to get some sleep and enjoy mothers day with my expecting wife but ill upload everything as soon as i get around to it...-K

it runs like a champ...up to 3500 it just cruises like normal...once it hits 3500 itll put u in your seat....i can definately feel the difference in the cams and injectors....we still have some tuning to do....in overdrive it doesnt feel like it wants to go anywhere but when i manually shift it moves...the tone of my exhaust is completely different now too...it sounds like a v6 camaro with straight pipes at WOT....im anxious to take her out on the freeway but it still needs time to let the cams break in properly...well see what happens later tonight when theres less people on the road so i can really open her up...as of right now we havent gotten it over 50mph....also FYI the jim wolf ecu completley removed the rev limit b/c we got it up to 8000 in first....wnow i just have to save up some more money for the port and polish/throttle bodies/and a transmission with a shift kit...still contemplating the HKS ALC though....im told that with the new cams my powerband has now moved so hopeflully this week before the wife and i leave for california i can have it tuned and dynoed...oh lastly where would one go about looking for a custom driveshaft to be made???

my conclusion is that mid to high range has improved massively but my low end isnt where i want her to be yet...all in due time though...

I'm a pushrod guy so breaking in the cam might be a little different than on an overhead motor. It all really depends on the follower(?) I think its called in an overhead.. basically whatever comes in contact with the cam itself. If it has a flat surface then those should have been replaced with the cams, if it has a wheel with bearings in it then and you re-used them you're fine.. I'm just going by flat tappet and roller lifters in a pushrod as a guidline here. I use cam lube to install and then, if its a flat tappet, I break-in for 15 minutes and then change the oil. If its roller, I still do the same anyway, but its not really neccessary, there's not much break in with a roller setup. A roller will not produce the metal shavings like a flat tappet will when the cam is breaking in.

Usually your cam profile designates where your powerband will be, so if its mid to high now, it will be tough to change that.

If you want to make some power N/A, start looking at head choices, if any and see what will work with those cams. If theres nothing aftermarket (headwise) for this motor, then a port and polish of your heads and lower intake might be your only route. Head flow is where you make or break your power in an N/A application.

Also, and I'm not sure how these J's are, but usually you only want to up your injector when you make a good amount more power over stock. On a realtively stock-ish motor, you may actually be hurting yourself with larger injectors.

Congrats on the mods! U sure have one sexy J. I am actually thinking about doing the cams as well and I would like to ask u some questions.

1) which cam did u get? 260/.368" 210 @.050"? 2) Do i really need injector upgrade with the JWT cams?3) Do i need ECU mod if I do not upgrade the injectors?

Thank so much in advance.

In the very first picture I see what looks like the K&N reverse conical air filter that came with my used J30T. Do you remember what you paid for it, and did the aluminum adapter come with it or did you have to pay extra for it, and if so what did it cost. Thanks in advance, Victor.

that is a Jim Wolf Pop Charger(basically Jim Wolfs cone filter)and it is basically a K & N but made from better material...it costed around $80 and did in fact come with the little metal adapter thingie

1-i got the mildest cam upgarde possible2-injector upgrade isnt neccisarily needed but i just wanted to cover my bases3-if you do not upgrade the inejctors you dont need the ecu upgrade however it does help and makes a big difference....the computer will self learn once the new cams are in....

if i had to do it all over again i would have personally skipped the injectors...it would have saved me about a G...

funny thing is that what started this all was my knock sensor going out so i got this wild hair up my *** talking about "while were in there..."

Man, i am in the same situation as you were in. I need to replace a camshaft necause the pin on the camshaft is messed up due to a poor timiing belt job from the previous owner.

I keep thinking...while I am there.... i might as well replace the knock sensor, VTC solenoids......... sigh.
