I took my family up to Boston on a last minute trip recently to visit my sick aunt and my cousins. While I've been to Boston many times, my wife and son have only been there once so they needed to see it. We spent one night in Boston (Beacon Hill), then a couple days on the North Shore (Swampscott).

Did a combo of touristy and family stuff. On Thursday, we had a late lunch at the Bull&Finch pub, better known as the inspiration for the TV show Cheers. Food was pretty good. Then a stroll through the Commons (saw the ol'Swan boats), then walked thru the Beacon Hill section. That evening we saw "Shear Madness", a audience participation whodunit play. Very amusing.

On Friday, we hit a few of the historic sites, like the old Statehouse, which was home to the Boston Massacre (no, it was not at Fenway when the Yankees last swept the Red Sox). We also buzzed by Paul Revere's house, the Old North Church, Fenway, and Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market. Yeah, it's a tourist trap, but they had some entertaining street performers which was cool.
We also visited the Charlestown Navy Yard. Arriving just as the USS Constitution was returning from a spin in the harbor (They reverse it every so often). A rare treat. It was cool seeing her moving (pulled by a tug of course).
Also saw a Navy Destroyer in drydock. The Park ranger said it has sprung a leak.

On Saturday, while with my cousins, we went candlepin bowling (at a joint on the infamous Lynnway. My son, cousin and I did some good trash talking only to be outscored by my 10 yr old niece (though she did have bumpers in her lane). We also strolled thru old Marblehead (pronounced "Mahblehead") and had lunch at the Landing, nice waterfront restaurant.

IHere are a few pics:

Candlpin Bowling... It's a must do, and unique to Massachusetts/New hampshire. The alley's are similar to regular bowling, but the balls are the size of a grapefruit, you get 3 shots instead of two, and they don;t clear the pins after each shot. Awesome for kids.

Marblehead....Beautiful little town, lossa old homes, charming shops, bustling little bay.

The USS Constitution, The oldest commissioned US warship. It was already out in the harbor when we arrived.

Old Ironsides docking...

Destroyer USS Cassin Young in drydock. Very long ship.

The Old state house. The massacre site is marked in brick across the street.

Fun trip. Boston is a great vacation destination. Everyone should put it on their must do list.

Man, your making me homesick. Glad you had a good time! I'm still a little unsure of candlepin, but the GF loves it.

I have never done anything but candlepin. Where you able to go on the cassin young, it is in very good shape for the amount of traffic it gets.

I only went candlepin bowling once. And it was right next to my favorite pizza place. Which was recently shut down as part of a drug sting.

Suddenly, I make sense.

You could go onboard her, but I was outvoted about spending the time to do it. It's a slick ship. My picture does not do it justice. I was also psyched to climb the nearby Bunker Hill Monument, but was denied as it was being refurbished.
