I've never mastered getting the plug out without getting a goodly quantity of oil on my hands and probably some splashed elsewhere, so that's one of the attractions for me. I've also oil change places crossthread the bolt, and my 1993 F150 pickup has threads that are almost gone on the drain hole.
As far as the removal of the drain plug, hold the plastic container close to the drain hole while you slowly unscrew the drain plug with your other hand. You can feel when it is about to come out and remove it quickly while the oil is draining into the plastic container. I have a block of wood that I set the container on while the rest of the oil drains out. After it reaches a slow drip I take a rag and wipe the drain plug hole before replacing the drain plug.
The drain plug when inserted correctly should be easy to hand tighten. If you feel the slightest resistance remove and start over to avoid stripping the threads.
Once the plug is hand tight I use the socket wrench to just give a slight tighten to the plug.
Too many horror stories at quick oil change places. I'd rather do it myself.
By letting the dealer do it once a year they lubricate all your hinges and clean your car real nice.
