Put a full set of Toyo Eclipse (Les Schwab's house brand from Toyo) 205/70/15s on my hatch (stock alum wheels) yesterday. I put the car through a thorough test which included turning the steering wheel fully both left & right. I heard no rubs.
I inspected the wheel wells and saw 3 very small scuff marks where the tires managed to contact the plastic. These marks were well away from the edges of the plastic wheel well liner and easily flexed in 3/8 inch when I pushed lightly with my finger. They fit!
p. s. I did notice there is some difference, especially in tread width, between different tire brands. The Toyo Eclipse was on the narrower end of the range.I didn't notice any difference from a stop in first gear, and I'm getting an additional 8% overdrive.
