I am looking for as much info on fuel cells as i can find. this isnt for my 240, but for my RX7 (79 pos, witch the fuel system rusted away). i know where to get full cells, but what i am looking for are ideas/parts to setup a spot to be able to easily fill it from the out side of the car. we will be redoing the complet fuel system so any other ideas you have on that get them out. I am open to anything, and everything. Thanks

Joe

Do you mean FUEL CELL?

You can rig up almost any kind of filler that you want... but I'm not sure about the street legality issues. You will also have to consider gravity. You can't mount the fuel cell higher than your desired filler location. There just isn't much room in the RX-7 without doing some custom work.

To build a filler, select an adequate location, buy a universal filler opening (or you could build one) and cut appropriately. Buy enough 1.5" or larger fuel line for the route from the filler opening to the tank. You also need to consider some kind of vapor recovery system for the tank (fuel cell). Otherwise you are not only illegal (AFIK this is required), but likely to pass out from fumes.

Thanks for that corection (kinda tired)

We are going to be removing most of the back floor panel, and setup some custom brakets/bracing and put a new peace of sheat metal down. So I will be able to mont it just about any place in the back of the car. We are either going 8 or 12 gal (not sure yet), and we need to find out some more of the street leaglity stuff with locations for the cell, and the fill spot, and such.

It's a darn good idea, and I wish you the best with the project... may I ask what your goals are in plannng to build the car?

I just wonder if it might be a lot cheaper to replace the fuel system with an OEM tank and maybe upgrade the pump, reguator, fuel lines and such. This project for relocating and replacing the tank with a fuel cell is a logistical nightmare. It is totally possible, and a great idea.... but cost/gains seems a little prohibitive for a vehicle that is for anything other that track use in competition.

Well for the time being, I am not sure. I am not looking to spend lots of money on the car at this time (would rather spend it on my 240). But It will one day be pretty much race only, but street leagle. Plans call for Turbo, preformace carb, street port, full exhaust, updated ingnition system, and other goodies. It will be Frist a drag car, then a autoX. this thing might not happen for 1, maybe 2 years. it will be a slow project over time that we would like to have at lest running. the resone for removing the back floor panel, is the amount of rust that is in this part of the car. this car is both my project and my friends. so we have 2 incomes to spend on it. And will most likely be daily drivin by his sister tell we decide to take it on fully. and thanks for the info

Well, a welded empty box would just be a fuel tank. A fuel CELL has sponge-like material inside that keeps the contents from sloshing around. Also, they are usually much stronger than an OEM type tank.

What i think we will do is make a sunken spot in the back, and place the tank in it, so we will have access to the fuel pump, and filter from inside the car, and if we add a second fuel cell for high octan we can have a vavle to switch from one to the other. Then just make a cover for it all.
