I see that the spec calls for premium unleaded fuel.

Has anyone had any success using regular 87 Octane?

You can use it, but the car's ECU will compensate for it, and retard the ignition timing to avoid detonation. Not worth the loss of power if you ask me...

It would also cause a decrease in gas mileage as well.

Stay away from low grade gas...the loss in performance is just not worth it!!!

The major advantage in Premium is the extra amount of detergents added at the refinery.

It cuts down on the amount of BG44k/Techron you need to buy.

I wondered about the same thing as you when I took delivery of my 2006 6sp manual on 12/31/05. The car came with a full tank of gas which I assumed was filled with premium? When I had 3/4 of a tank I filled up with regular. When I reached a 1/2 tank I again filled up with regular. I refilled with regular 87 octane again with a 1/4 tank. At no time did I notice any difference in performance. With 18k miles now all on regular fuel I've had no problem and never heard a ping. It does not matter to me if zero to sixty takes a fraction of a second longer. I'd rather have the money in my pocket. IMHO the most important thing is to change the oil regurlarly. I change mine myself every three thousand miles. Did it again this morning in 70 degree temp in central NJ.Can you believe that for Jan 6th? Good luck whatever you decide.

Test done at Nissan Sport Mag (summer 06 issue) found 10% decrease in whp with 87 vs. 91. Only 1mpg drop in mileage. This was in a Nissan Murano.I would follow the manual. Strange how some folks question fuel grade recommendations in the owner's manual because it will cost them a few cents more. Show me the same whp with 87 on a dyno and I will believe it. Until then it's the manual for me.
