I have had fuel smell in my 96 Q now for almost a year. It started when I decided to replace the fuel pump to avoid having to purchase a new controller. I had it done at a local foreign repair shop that had the best reputation in town. The closest infiniti dealer is 120 miles away. He replaced it by way of the trunk and either bent the fuel pump or the gas tank. He won't admit to wrong doing and claims the gas smell is coming from somewhere else, although I have found gas leaking from the seal of the fuel pump. I have had another shop actually remove the tank from the car and try to straighten the flange, replace the gasket and seal with airplane sealer. I thought I had it figured out until recently the fumes are back. Now I am considering replacing the fuel tank and pump to the tune of about $800 in parts. Does any one have any better ideas for a solution? Thanks in advance for your input.

A used tank, well cleaned, should be a lot cheaper and in good shape because it isn't exposed to the elements.

I have looked into a used one, but I am not sure if they can be shipped after being used. Would it be a hazard. There aren't any salvage yards around here that would have one.

The metal flange that the pump mounts to is bent? Wouldn't you just get one of those instead of a new pump? Make sure it's not the ferrule nuts that are loose or a leaking fuel hose under the hood.

Surely not if it is steam cleaned and dry?

If the openings of the tank are sealed with the appropriate plastic & tape, it shouldn't be a problem for you to get, but I'd be suprised if a freight company would carry it.

I'd make sure you never went back to that workshop, especially if they won't warranty their stuff ups.

If the smell is coming out of your vents when you are sitting at idle, you better check the injector seals and fuel hoses under the plenum. That is probably the most common source. Have you had the under plenum work done? If not, at the age of your car, regardless of mileage, it may be time. Good luck.
