My FSU is giving me false reading and, in general, just dying. Is this something I can clean and lubricate, i.e. a float, or is this another accursed electrical part I have to reach deep into my pocket for?

Unfortunately, the sending unit is integrated with the pump.

The contacts are exposed where they can be cleaned, though. They're actually submerged in fuel much of the time, so they shouldn't be dirty or have carbon buildup on them.

Could be a lot of things...if you're sure it's the sending unit and not your gauge cluster, I'd just pull the pump and have a look. There's a good How-To in the FAQ thread.
