Fuel sending unit / Gauge light?

Our new (to us) 2003 Pathfinder's fuel gauge reads wrong most of the time, mostly just sitting at 3/4 tank. Sometimes it seems to read correct for a short time, then back to where we know it can't be correct. No big deal, but until we get around to fixing, does anyone know if the low fuel light reads independently of the gauge? I don't want to run out of fuel to find out.

If anyone else has this problem, we finally ran the tank down til the low-fuel light came on. The gauge still showed 1/2 tank or more so the light must work independently.
