Fuel Pump Woahs!!!

Postby mpqualdie » Thu Feb 21, 2019 11:21 am

I have an 86 720 I restored two years ago and I'm going out of my mind with the fuel pump issues. I put the rebuilt drive train from my 85 in it which has a Webber carb on it. The 86 FI pump was way too much, so I put the 85 pump on the truck. It went bad some time later because it was old and I haven't been able to get it right since. The "aftermarket" replacement doesn't send enough fuel. It runs fine but when going up an incline or accelerating hard it runs itself out of fuel. I bought a McGreggor pump to help it and it worked for about 6 months and now the other one has failed again. I'm getting frustrated and don't know what to do. I've read reviews about the Holley and Carter pumps, but I really think the issue is that the "aftermarket" pumps can't suck the fuel up through the top of the tank and then send to the carb and eventually burning the pump up. Has anybody had this issue? What advice could I get to rectify it?

Put the 85 tank in it. Should have the pickup at the bottom of the tank, then you won't be burning up inline pumps.
