fuel pump testing for a 1990 KA24e truck

Need some step by step fuel pump testing for my 1990 truck. When does the fuel pump actually starts pumping? Is it when you turn the key to "ON"?

when you turn the key on, it will run for 3 seconds, and then it will turn off if it doesnt see a tach siginal.

yeah, you should be able to hear it from under the truck.

Thanks guys! seems the pump inop..it only runs less than a second when I turn the key on and it doesn't pump when i repeat the testing process. Need to buy one...thanks!
