Hi,

I know when there's a humming noise from the fuel pump it is going bad. All I wanna know is that when the fuel pump is in good condition (let's say brand new) will there still be a noise coming from behind the back seat? Or is it ABSOLUTLY QUIET????

thanks

After I recently changed my fuel pump using OEM parts, the first 1500 miles or so it made a lot of noise, not the hummm, but sounded like fuel flowing. It seemed to stop making that noise for a little while, but the noise is back most of the time. Like its constantly circulating fuel, and it is being put back into the tank. Hear it when full or empty, warm or cold. etc.

Maybe there was a design change in the FP, or mine has something wrong, or ???? I started a thread on it in the Q45 forum a while ago, but was over-busy when the noise came back to follow up and say my noise came back.

When my fuel pump was bad it made a buzzing noise almost like it was vibrating. After replacement with OEM new it now makes a humming noise less the vibration. I think even a new pump will be a bit loud as you get below 1/4 tank. Try filling it up (take out a loan?) and see if it gets quieter.

even new pump is not silent. you should always hear a hummm as you turn key on and wait the 5 sec before engaging starter to pressurise the rails when cold (no arguments please about leakdown rates).

what is different after you change the pump is that on new pump you really don't hear the pump when the engine is running. eric, i also had the gurgling noise for a while after last week's replacement on black. as goody said, full tank helped, but still sometimes hear the returning stream of fuel. no biggie.

Thanks guys. I feel much better now knowing I take long trips without my baby leaving me stranded somewhere.

Since we sold my wife's 2000 Camry, my Q45 has been our only transportation (which I LOVE ). I always hated driving the little stupid 4 cyl Camry.

Last weekend we drove with my Q to Solvang, CA. About 140 mileas each way. Its the best. The comfort the power when needed to pass just about any car out there. Even the new crap. I'll never trade or sell my Q45 for anything. They don't make them like any more.

By the way, been trying to convince the wifey to get a used Q. we'll see.

Definitely on my Q i can hear the fuel pump when I open the trunk. It sounds like letting air out of a tire, sorta... just sounds like a hissing sound, like a fluid flowing.... With the car at idle with the radio off you shouldnt hear it.

When they get BAD it sounds like a beehive and you can hear it in the car at idle with the radio off.

Just be lucky it runs-Land Rover was rated the absolute bottom of the list in reliability recently by Consumer Reports-typical British garbage mechanicals wrapped up in a pretty package to fool the suckers out there.

The pump makes MORE NOISE as it ages and the rotation speed slows down thus the pitch becomes audible. The current draw increases as the pump slows down like all motors [HVAC, window, seats, sunroof]......the temperature of gasoline changes its viscosity so in winter start up the pump is slower. The pump slows down with the extra back pressure/resistance of a dirty fuel filter.*

The frequency response of ears changes as one ages so what 20 years olds hear vs 60 year old owners is very different same with men and woman and your dog.

8 POLE dc motors [the pump] have easily quantifiable noise outputs.

* So little loop volume is created at idle or cruise that a dirty fuel filter may not show up until acceleration and high rpms when the pump capacity is really needed!
