I have been driving my q 45 for 10 years and never relized this forum was available. I have spent the last 2 days going through all the post and now know what the buzzing in the trunk is, how to fix my vibration @ 2250 rpm, where to get discount parts and that my cd player is not the only one that keeps breakdown. I was starting to think about a new car but I hated to part with my q that is in mint condition. The value of the advice on this forum became totally evident when I call my dealer yesterday and ask about replacing the fuel pump. The advice I received was to keep driving until it quit. The cost of the part would be $689 cdn and 8 hours labour. I ask if that would not result in my control unit burning out. The reply was" no" we tell people just keep driving till it dies.

SOP for dealers is to replace both FPCU and fuel pump.

Get over to Infiniti Mechanic Forum and do some reading, especially Tangalora's excellent replacement post.

This board is a great resource. I would have sold mine years ago if it were not for the demystifying advice here! A lot of this knowledge transfers to other vehicles as well (ie. fluld changes, systems functions, etc.). Further, you realize the low level of competence with this car by independent mechanics and most dealers. Not that this car is rocket science level -- but it seems many shops just through parts problems, all on your nickle. Either learn how to DIY, or stick with a competent mechanic. Either way, this board is a fantastic resource!

Replace the pump your self. It is not a big deal. There are many posts with good pics and advice.

Pull the control unit open it and look for any sign of components over heating or solder melting. If all looks well it most likely is ok.

Not to jack your sale man but everyone ive talked to about the fuel pump advises completely against using a used fuel pump. but definately ised FCPU are golden and will save you lots of cash.

Not sure if Joe (Scottsdale INfinti) will ship to Can, but he gives us great deals, and replacing the pump isn't too dificult.

Let me find Joe's (888) 216-5328 and a thread on the pump change.

I am a total Newb, can barely tell the difference between a socket wrench and my... well, you get the point. I just replaced the fuel pump on my '91, and all went very smoothly.

My suggestions... 1. Print the dandy write up by Tangelora (www.q45.org)2. Make sure you have several large towels to soak up gas.3. Work in a well ventilated area.4. Make sure you have one or two good work lights... they will help you when you are working under the rear deck in the trunk.

Other than that, you should be in great shape. email me ([email protected]) if you need some pics of the job. I took about 10 pics along the way. You might be able to get them from Wes as well since I emailed them to him.
