I am going to try to tame the swarm of bees in my trunk tomorrow.

I measured my fuel pump current and looked at the current waveform on a O'scope and all looks well, but it is very noisey. I have read all the pump posts here and in the mech forum. I looked at the fuel pump photos posted by TexasOil in the readers rides section and phoned him for advice. His cleaned up pump is quiet and still working. So, tomorrow I am going to pull mine and try the clean and polish approach.

Wish me luck.

Hmmm...

Tomorrow I have to take my fuel pump out to replace the O ring (fuel smell) and the gas gauge (bent the sender when I installed)... maybe I should try the cleaning thing while its out...

TOil said this takes a little finesse. the pump is not made to take apart...So judicious care is involved. My take is I save $300 or I don't. He said the only thing wrong with the pump was the bit of corrosion on the rotor shown in the pics. He cleaned that up and she was good to go.

What exactly do you take apart and clean on the pump? I squeezed out the screeen at the bottom, thats about it. Everything looked clean after 20k.

Look at the photos posted by TexasOil in the members rides section.

One photo shows some corrosion or rust on the pump rotor. He said that was all he found wrong with the pump.

I would not recomend disassembling the fuel pump. I did get it done. I had to drill out the crimps on a drill press. I couldn't bend them out no matter what I tried. I drilled small holes through the case and in to the plastic top so I could put in small #4 screws to hold it together after reassembly. If I had another pump and did this again I could do a better job now knowing what I was up against.

Just as in TexasOils Photos the rotor was corroded. I reassembled and tested it out of the tank. It ran relatively quiet, but I didn't want to risk it. I didn't run it out of the tank before I took it apart. I went to the dealer and bought a new one. $60 bucks more than from Joe.
