89 fastback- i was finishing up some free spirit driving then my car started acting up. Gassed it and all i heard was exhaust and no go. When i got to the gas station i turned off my car and it never turned on again. We pulled out the fuel line and found that fuel wasn't being pumped. we checked the fuel pump and we pulled it out. sometimes when i turn on the ignition the pump would run for about 2 seconds then it would stop. some guy at the part store told us that when that happens the pump relay could be overheating and needs to be replaced. but the thing is that it doesn't always run for two seconds when we turn on the ignition. We we ran a direct power to the pump it didn't go. so you guys think it's the relay or the pump itself? and where is the relay located? there are many threads but i dind't really find an answer to where the relay is thanks!!!!

If you are running direct power to the pump, then you are bypassing the relay - and since you mentioned your pump doesn't go even w/ direct power, the pump needs replacing.

To find out if the relay is supplying power, you can use a voltimeter on the positive wire going to the pump to see if it's getting voltage. If you aren't getting voltage to the pump, then you need to check the relay... which, unfortunately, I don't know where it is located off the top of my head.

You may also want to check the fuel pump fuse, which is in the engine bay.

If you ran direct line and it did not run, its obviously the pump. The pump comes on for 5 seconds when you turn ignition on.

so the pump is suppose to run for 5 seconds EVERYTIME you turn on the iginition and turn off if the fly wheel isn't moving.

Basically, yes. I don't know if it's exactly 5 seconds or not, but your car is made to prime the fuel pump every time going from OFF/ACC -> ON position.
