i am about to go look at a 90 300zx that will not start. (the guy is asking 1500, and it also has a torn seat, vandalized dash, and stolen sound system) guy says that the engine is not getting any fuel.

i was wondering how you get to the fuel pump in one of these things. he said you have to drop the gas tank, but i thought it would be a good idea for me to check. nissan engineering is usually a bit better than that i thought.

i have a walbro that i could try to start it with, but i am also thinking it might be an electrical problem caused when the radio was stolen.

i will be around for another hour or 2 before i leave to look at it if someone wants to toss me some advice.

thanks!

the fuel pump is in the gas tank, there is an access panel under the parcel chelp, also the TT (and I assume the N/A?), uses a fuel pump control module located behind the panel behind the crivers seat, I gotta say for a ragged non running car, the price might be high, could still be worth it but these things are not cheap to repair

Actually the seat was not that bad. it actually was not vandalism, just that spot where 300zx seats always seem to wear.

and the initials on the dash were not that bad either. i could either cover them with a gauge cluster or maybe even one of those vinyl repair kits and it would be bearable. only issues are not starting, it needs that bushing on the shifter, and it has some mild front end damage. (drivers side quarter panel is tweaked and the front bumper needs to be replaced as it looks like it has been curbed pretty good)

i am going to go over there and hook up my walbro to it and see if i can start it and try to identify why the quarter panel is tweaked. (verify that there is no real structural damage)

i was not able to find this fuel pump access though. can someone give me a picture? although, i am thinking i may try to start it from a gas can, that way he can't try to jack the price up on me if i do get it running.

assuming this is a 2 seater, there si a raised area nehind the driver and passanger seats spanning from one plastic side panel to the other, if you pull the carpet in the rear back you'll see 4 or 5 screws holding the rear edge to the floor, once you pry off the plastic panles you'll see 2 or 3 nuts on each side, once those are removed the package tray lifts up and out, it might take some jiggling as it kinda lips under the forward piece of trim, benether that you'll see 2 access panels,. the one on the drivers side has 4 screws, remove them and pull the cover aside, you can now unblug the wire harness and fuel feed, return and vent lines, them take another 8 or so screws out and the pump assy lifts out

found it. the fuel pump is getting voltage but it is not doing anything. we rolled the car outside last night and today i am going to try to start it by sticking my walbro in a gas can.

the only thing i am worried about is where it has been in an accident before. looks like something dinged the hood and bumper pretty good. everything looks straight except for the bottom corner of both fenders where they have been flaired out about 3/16 of an inch. it was dark and i forgot to check for uneven wear on the tires, it has obviously been driven for a while after the damage.

any sugestions? i will get some pics up of it tonight.

i think i can talk the guy down to 1250 for it and the rebuild has 50k on it.

the fuel pump gets between 7 and 12 volts (IIRC, feel free to corect me here) if the FPCM fails you can still get voltage just not enough to run the pump

it was getting +8v, this is also with jumping it off from a 2002 350z. when cranked, voltage in the 300zx dropped from 14.4v to 8v.

PTU power transistor unit, it's the metal dohickey on the front of the passanger side timing belt cover with all kinds of wires, common problem, easy fix, but they aren't cheap, might try finding a salvage yard or someone with a spare to loan
