In some cases, they're repairable - If you're handy with a soldering iron. Typically, the power transistor that supplies DC current to the fuel pump overheats and fails. When it overheats, it often also burns the pads on the printed circuit board that it is soldered to. Repairing it involves unsoldering the failed transistor, cleaning the charred areas of the PC board, and soldering in a replacement transistor.
BTW, a bad fuel pump can cause the overheating - and so can a clogged fuel filter.
