I have 1996 Q45 and I need a Fuel Pump Control Unit. Is it worth trying to find a used one? If you have one let me know. Thanks

new is over $400. Some owners keep a spare tested good one. I have 2 stashed away. If you cant find one locally, I may be talked into selling you one of my spares.Plan on spending around $100 for a used one in mint condition.

I had one that I purchased from someone a while ago, but my tech says it isn't good. How do you test them?

I have one lying around
Removed from my old 1993 Q part # 17001 60U01

But I think you need a one from a 94-96 Part # 17001 60U02
Unknown if they are interchangeable but someone will chime in and let you know

I plugged in each spare and ran the car for a week{200+ miles} with each installed......also opened up each and looked for burnt parts/connections.

Coincidentally, I just gave the keys to the tow truck driver because my wife got stalled in the Kroger lot. It would start but wouldn't take the gas. I assume it's the fuel pump because it has never been changed. I don't like the sound of $400 just for the control unit. Must we add the cost of the fuel pump to the control unit or does it come as a complete unit? I'm open to any suggestions on the best way to go and can stop the shop from proceeding in the morning. I would also like to know if there are any special tricks that I might be able to pass on to save time and money. Thanks.

In some cases, they're repairable - If you're handy with a soldering iron. Typically, the power transistor that supplies DC current to the fuel pump overheats and fails. When it overheats, it often also burns the pads on the printed circuit board that it is soldered to. Repairing it involves unsoldering the failed transistor, cleaning the charred areas of the PC board, and soldering in a replacement transistor.

BTW, a bad fuel pump can cause the overheating - and so can a clogged fuel filter.

Had the FPCU repaired and replaced and it seems to be working. I have felt little hesitation from time to time and hope it is because the car has been sitting for a while.
