My current fuel pump is making some noise - I have a fuel pump from another Q [pump has seen 2 years or work and perhaps 25K miles total]. How can I check to make sure the pump is in working order before putting it in? Any possiblity of starting it with some voltage?

Thanks

Checking the resistance is a good indication of the health of the coils. Should be about .5 ohms. Don't run the pump dry--gasoline cools and lubricates. Feel free to connect some hoses and dunk them in a gas container, then run it off 12V direct. To be 100% certain, tee in a pressure gauge and slowly pinch off the output hose until you're satisfied you get at least 50psi on the gauge. If the 25k pump is OEM I probably wouldn't go beyond checking resistance.

Neither would I install it unless it is an emergency. Sock still white?

It is 1/3 to 1/4 used as far as service life is concerned, more if tank is not immaculate.

So it may have a little less than $200 value left in it. For me, 75,000 miles is 10 years of driving...if I only drove 1 vehicle and not 2.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. The pump is OEM and was in my other car for the period. I checked the resistance and it is indeed 0.5 ohms. It will be replacing the noisy fuel pump currently in my car this weekend.

I have done the pump replacment now 2 times and the car is already ready for fuel pump replacement [seats, and other things out] - so should be another 1 hr job to get it in.

Will post what happens - thanks

Why would you not install it? Perhaps I am missing the point - I know it is used, it was in my other car, not from some junk - the work to put it in and out is insignificant - 1-2 hours max.

I am just interested in the down side of putting it in, not questioning your suggestion.

Pumps can go bad anytime - we know that mileage and age will increase the chances of this happening, howeve; both are in check - low mileage and less than 2 years old.

Thanks

Just frquency of repair.

Since you know it's history, there is less risk on a shorter working interval than an unknown one.

I was all set to do the pump replacement and got hit with this driver door latch problem, wasted all afternoon trying to pry it open. Next step is mr. locksmith - I doubt they will be able to do anything interesting, it seems the latch is locked and jammed, we will see
