Anyone know where I can get a closeup picture or diagram of the fuel pump assembly for a 1995 Q45? I'm having some difficulty getting the fuel float/gauge to work after replacing the pump. Looks like part of the plastic that holds the float onto the pump assembly may be missing. Either that or it was designed by Mickey Mouse to break upon removal. Also the the spring on the float had corroded and broke. I didn't see anything loose in the tank but the inside did look like it was starting to rust and the whole pump assembly had a powdery coating of rust and other deposits. (thanks ethanol). Maybe that is why the pump failed with less than 70K miles? The pump on my 1990 made it to 120K and the inside of the tank looked clean as a whistle.

Also just completed other major maintenance on the 1995- new plugs, valve cover gaskets, fuel and water pump, belts, idler pulley bearings, hoses, thermostat, fluid change. Appears to have been the first work done on the engine. Also, cleaned all the electrical connectors, throttle body and plenum, installed new foam rubber around the radiator and a transmission cooler and relocated the carbon canister. I just reverse flushed the fuel and external transmission filter because I didn't have a spare on hand. Has anyone tried filling the fuel filter with injector cleaner as a cheap substitute for a FI service?

So far so good except for the fuel gauge. I know I saved myself a ton of aggravation and expense by doing it myself. Inside of valve covers looked super clean and should be good for another 70k?

I'll try to post some pics if I can figure out how.

I recommend you remove the tank before installing the new pump because you don't want to do the same job twice do You?

And yea you have to be careful with the sending unit, they break easily, I broke one my self because I was rushing it on the 1991 Q45 part car I had, Luckily the fuel pump survived.

Remove and steam clean tank then reinstall.

Here's a closeup of the plastic piece with the float arm removed for clarity.

Thanks for the pic. The plastic clip holding on the float rod came off as suspected. Can't see anything inside the tank other than the surface coating of rust. Hopefully I can get a new one from IOS and won't need to pull the tank. I'll have to coat the inside with some epoxy when the weather warms up I guess.

Well I wired the float arm back on and everything seems to be working ok. Can't emphasis enough the need to be carefully when pulling the assembly out of the tank. Also installed new fuel filter full of about half a can of BG FI cleaner for a quick and cheap FI cleaning service. Filter was full of rust and really needed changing.

Always good to reverse blow out fuel filter with air onto a paper towel to view the trash in the tank that was stopped by filter.

I change fuel filters every 6 months now and am amazed at the amount of dirt in so called premium gasoline.

Rust in tank means you purchased water and caused many problems with injectors and fuel pump.

I was having a hard time removing the pump because the ring is very tight. I just can't dislodge it. I'd already visited several threads discussing like this one, replacing fuel pump assembly. But still I can't remove the ring.

You can't remove the fuel sending unit because of the O-ring?

Thats imposible are you sure you have a Q45?

Was the OEM O-ring used?

Sounds like a PO may have used RTV adhesive in the o-ring mating surface to seal a leak? (Which is great if you're going to the moon but not so good if it ever has to come apart again)

RTV would be easy to remove. A super adhesive would not.

Still don't know what kind of car Teppy has, but it must not be a Nissan if he is using that website.

In the fuel tank in the trunk. Just pull out the forward trunk carpeting bulkhead and it's all right there.

If you remove the parcel compartment and the big black bracket that supports the keyless entry module (along with the reciever) you get a lot more room to move. I had no trouble removing and replacing the pump assembly without damaging the float/arm with those things removed even with the tank still in the car.
