Thinking my fuel pump might be on its way out, lately ive been hearing this sort of whining sound when I start the engine.
Besides the 5-10second whining the car goes up to idle right on start and drops down like its about to stall but it goes right back up to idle. This is usually only on a cold start.

The only fuel pump issue ive ever seen is the car would not start, no whining, nothing just would not start one day.
Ive read several things that say a failing fuel pump will whine.

Does replacing the fuel pump require any special tools or is it a simple swap?
(aka line clamps or whatever)

It's not extremely difficult to change the fuel pump. It's located behind the driver's seat under the package shelf. You will have to pull the interior parts to get the shelf out, then disconnect 3 pesky hoses on the pump assembly. After that, a few 8mm bolts and it will pull out.

But, the fuel pump is quite expensive. OEM ones run around $300, new. You may want to verify the pump is the problem first. Put a pressure gauge on it and see what it is doing first.

is it anything like replacing the fuel filter?
by that I mean is it going to spit out some fuel when disconnecting the hoses, regardless of disconnecting relay and stalling it out several times

It won't be bad as long as you relieve the pressure in the system first.

thats what im getting at, I replaced my fuel filter recently and followed a write up on relieving pressure and it still shot a good amount of fuel out

and naturally i dont want fuel in my cab
maybe a bad write up?

disconnected fuel relay
opened gas cap
stalled the car a good 10 times, seemeed like it didnt want to stay dead
disconnected battery
connected fuel relay
replaced fuel filter (several rags worth of gas)
put gas cap on
connected battery
started up

leave the relay out until after the job. Also, loosen the line at the fuel filter and relieve pressure there if you are worried about residual pressure. Have a couple of rags handy, but I didn't have any gas come out.
