Fuel problems

Ok so I'm still using the stock 240sx fuel pump and I havnt driven my car yet. I've been finishing some small wiring like dash wiring and I noticed while letting my car idol up to running temp. so I could see if the eng. temp gauge was working (which it was), I kept smelling gas. It's coming from the fuel line where it meets and leaves the fuel filter. The clamps are on tight and the hoses are new. Why do you think there is fuel leaking. Could it be possible that I have the fuel in line and fuel return line backwards? My car idles perfect besides that.

if you had the lines backwards it wouldnt run. its probably a small leak around the clamps
