OK, the car is a sohc 240sx hatchback. Ive been having this weird problem for a couple of months now and since I plan on selling the car soon and getting a new 240, i want to fix it. Plus, its darn annoying. OK, whenever I turn the key to the on position, the fuel pump charges the fuel system up. If i try to just start it right away, the car will crank but not start. If i let it charge the fuel system i guess, it starts up fine and idles right where it should be. Now, when i drive down the road the car smells like raw gas. When i stop and sit somewhere like a stop sign or light it when the true problem happens. The idle will climb up from around 1k way up to 2k and stick up there. It climbs pretty fast, and stays right there at 2k rpms. If i step on the throttle really quick to snap it open and then snap back closed quickly, the rpms obviously jump way up to around 4k or so, then go right back down to 1k like it should, and doesnt stick or linger anywhere. The problem will occur whether the car is cold or hot, it doesnt matter how long the car it driven for or the weather.

I put a new fuel pump and strainer on about 3 months ago. The gas tank was also dropped and completely cleaned out at the time due to all the crud i found in it. I put in a new fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor just after that too. I cleaned the throttle body and lubricated the throttle and cruise control cables and linkage.

Am I wrong in assuming that the problem has to do with fuel? The smell of gas leads me to beleive the problem is fuel related. I am wondering what the problem could be and how to test for it. Should i be looking into my fuel pressure regulator or injectors? How do i test them? Thanks for any information in advance.

first try to set your TPS properly There is a post on TPS adjustment in 240 technical. After that if you still have a raw fuel smell check the connectors on your injectors see if they are corroded in the terminals. If so clean them up.

i re adjusted the tps and the gas smell has gone away. as for the idle, i read around the forums for about 4 hours one day and finally sniffed a lead to the problem. i unplugged one of the sensors on the back on the intake plenum, and voila! the problem is over with the high idle.
