I know that the manual says 91. Does anyone else had some experience using lower grade fuel (89 or 87)?

Use Octane 91 fuel only. The engine on the J is off a high compression variety and the fuel injectors are an uncommon design. So if you don't want to wreck something and/or want to get optimum mileage use the premium stuff.

Premium fuel must be used for designed operation. Lower octane fuel will pre-ignite easier causing the knock sensors to retard ignition timing. The result is reduced engine performance and therfore lower MPG. There is the common misconception that higher octane fuel is inherintly more powerful. The fact is that all types of gasoline contain about the same energy per unit but premium is able to be more fully compressed without the danger of engine knock (pre-ignition). Higher compressablility means a more powerful explosion when the spark is applied and a longer power stroke.

Use 87 or 89 or 93. Infiniti made a big deal out of posting "Unleaded Premium Fuel Only" all over the car, to scare the crap out of you ...as long as knock sensor is operating properly there is no harm done to the vehicle whatsoever. You will lose a little power, but probaly won't notice unless at WOT. When I have run lower octanes, I have noticed no decrease in MPG. All new Nissan/Infiniti with even higher compression engines state that 91 or higher is "recommended". Bottom line is, yes, car should perform at peak with 91 or higher, but don't sweat it.

I get the best gas mileage on 89 octane. It isnt the price b/c if you do the math, its about $1.00 more to use 93, but I get 2-3 more MPG on 89 octane.

FYI, the knock sensor isnt just there for people who dont want to use 93. Its there to prevent failure of the engine.

This engine was deisgned for high compression, with high compression you must use higher octane. Simple as that.

bump**

lower octane fuel will accumilate mroe dirt in your lines and clog your fuel injectors faster.

That is not true, i remember i saw a 20/20, or some news program saying that higher octane gas is not any cleaner or better than lower octane gas, and it won't give you better gas milage, or make the engine last longer, as long as you put in what the car manufacture recommend octane .

Gas stations underrate their gasoline. Due to the simple fact that if a lower than advertised octane is found there is a huge fine involved, and I believe they station is required to remove the tanks for inspection.

So in your area advertised "89" octane is actually close to 91-92, the nissan recommended octance.

I will actually have to try some 89 one day and see how she runs.

the higher the octane gas the less additives and the more pure the gas is. thats why 91+ octane gas is cleaner. you will have better emissions ratings with higher octane gas than lower octane gas. the dfifference may not be a huge noticible difference but there is a difference. that minute difference will add up over time. as for not seing a 20/20 about gas. um... if its not on tv it has to be false. right?
