I average about 15mpg city, and between 25-30mpg highway (3.0/automatic).

i couldnt get that good of mileage even if i pushed the damn car, i have heared numerous bullentins about the knock sensor going bad and retarding the timing and affecting fuel mileage, but its what its supose to be at warm idle, 15 degrees, have u had problems before wit bad fuel mileage?

Go to your local Autozone (http://www.superpages.com/b2b/N-AutoZone/S-NC/) and have your codes read. If you get a code for the knock sensor, you will know.

My highway mpg is based on long trips with the cruise control set.

The 19mpg you are getting for mixed driving doesn't seem that bad. How long are you on the hwy .vs city streets and on/off ramps?

I have been considering buying a I30 A33 and after reading this I might as well keep driving the old Cressida. How about some more I30 owners reporting in.

I thought around 20mpg in town and 28-30 on the open highway. Is this possible or just a pipe dream. Also the I30's need 89 or 91 octane gasoline (mid or prem grade) for best performance is that correct?

I30's really want 94, but they don't have that around here, so I'm stuck with 91, which isn't too big a deal. Infiniti recommends 91 as a minimum for proper performance and mpg. Anyway, my knock sensor went bad and I was getting about 18-20 mpg average. So what I did was ordered a new one and, for the time being, put a few resistors on the end of the KS plug to emulate a good KS switch for the ECU. Subsequently, my mpg average jumped to about 23-24 mpg average. This is with a short ram intake which is sucking in hotter air. So, I would imagine I might get 24-26 mpg average with a stock setup.

I suspect that if you are not using premium, then you are probably getting some knocking. The knock sensor compensates for this by retarding the timing. Therefore, your engine is not at it's most efficient, and you are getting crappy mileage.

In mixed city and highway driving (mostly stop and go on the highway too), I got about 25mpg out of my last tank. Driving home to Boston from Virginia last month I saw 31mpg from all highway driving. I always use 93 octane fuel (or 94 if it's available) Interestingly my gas mileage has gone up by about 2mpg since I switched over to full synthetic oil.

You guys need to pull your codes if you are getting anything less than 24 mpg out of an I30t running 91 octane. t stands for touring. It has stiffer springs, a spoiler, heated seats, auto-dim mirror etc. This has nothing at all to do with the motor. The motor is a VQ30de used in all 4th gen maximas and i30s. There is no difference except for the VLSD which would not affect MPG.

I'm curious, what do all of you think the capacity of your gas tank is?

When I first bought my 96 I30, I thought it was about 15 gallons, research and testing lead me to find that it's closer to 18 gallons. I've been able to drive my car to a complete stall (emptying out the gas tank for the most part) and when I filled up, the pump read 17.59 gallons. Online specs say 18.5.

Are all of you guys accounting for that capacity or are you using an offset method in which you fill up every time to find out how much you've actually used?

My mileage varies between 16MPGs during the summer with a dirty short ram in the city, up to about 24.5 MPGs in cooler temps with a clean filter on the HWY.

I'm perplexed by anybody who reports over 26MPG because that was the EPA estimate for the 4th gens.

once again i have no current or pending codes of any sorts, my timing is 15 degrees at idle, fuel trims are excellent, it runs great, im wondering if i should just change out the knock sensor for the hell of it ( i really hate to pull that upper intake), but i dont no any other way to go....

You don't need to pull intake up for replacing knock sensor.I did today without taking intake things off. It just spent less than 30min but the sensor is horrible price.

I drove my 02 I35 down to Maxwell AFB (75 miles) today and at 75-80 mph the computer was reading 25 mpg. I went there and back with A/C running on high with wife and two kids. And I used less than a 1/4 tank. I am running Premium Unleaded and my car has 43,000 miles.

You may need a new oxygen sensor. Usually bad mileage is related to that.

I'm averaging 22 in town, 30 on the highway. My 2001 I30 has 50,000 miles on it. I bought it new. I've used 89 octane in it for the past 4 years, with no knocking.....runs great!
