Tonight I opened the hood w/ the engine running, and I heard a rapid ticking noise. It appeared to be coming from around the fuel rail or injectors. I'd never noticed it before. Is this normal, or something to worry about?

hmm. i've been told that it could be valve tap, it's a ticking at idle correct? semi-rapid. and it goes away when you press on the throttle. it developed over time i've noticed. not sure if it's anything i should worry about.

If it's from around the injectors, it's absolutely normal. Our injectors are renown for being very loud.

I have the same thing and it bugs the s*** out of me. When you slightly push the throttle, it goes away. ARG! Make it stop!!

I've got some valve noise too. Unfortunately, a valve lash adjustment is very expensive and isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. I'll probably give in at some point and have someone do it for me, but I just live with it for now.

My buddy's remedy for strange engine noises was to turn up the stereo. "hear that noise, know what that means"? "Yup need bigger speakers"!

i thought the ka motor was valve tap imossible with self adjusting hydraulic lifters...but yea maybe run some fuel injector cleaner through if it makes u feel any better :)

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the KA24DE has mechanical, not hydraulic lifters. Valve lash is adjusted using shims, and is a real pain in the ***.

I plan on doing a compression test on my engine soon. Depending on the results of that, I might have someone do the valve lash adjustment for me. I hate weird noises from my car.

The SOHC KA uses hydraulic lifters. And SOHC lifters can make a lot of noise if they are dry. Try starting a freshly built SOHC motor and you'll know exactly what I'm taking about. Takes about 20 minutes of idles for it to go away.

And valve tap is much louder than injector ticking. The injectors will sound like a small solenoid. A valve hitting the seat real hard will sound a bit deeper and quite loud. Try walking away from the motor with the hood closed. If the ticking disappears under the sound of the motor, then it's the injectors.
