Hydrolocking BAD. 4 cycles in the engine--intake, compression, power, exhaust. If a cylinder has enough fluid in it (water, gas, any liquid) and is on the compression stroke when you start the car, you WILL have something fail. When the piston hits top dead center (TDC--highest point), there is very little volume in the combustion chamber, and nowhere for the liquid to go, so it doesn't take much to cause hydrolock. You would probably bend a connecting rod, or maybe break a lifter. Costly to repair. Happens often in flooded areas. People don't realize how deep the water is until it's pouring over the window sill, and by then, water's already been sucked into the intake and the engine's momentum causes it to hydrolock. Not a really big risk with a slow, drip-drip kind of leak. Gas is pretty thin and will run down past the piston rings pretty quick.
