My Fuel gauge was on empty. I filled the tank. It only held 17 gallons. The fuel gauge reads full. The technical specs says that the fuel capacity is 22.5 gallons. This would mean that there is 5.5 gallons in reserve fuel. Is this normal or is the fuel gauge malfunctioning.

All depends on how the fuel pump sending unit was positioned from which I assume on a fuel pump or sending unit replacement.

Hopefully someone can post pictures or more info on the sending units correct position in the tank.

I read a post by Q45tech that said roughly that there is a 2 gallon reserve but by then the pickup is sucking in air.

Also a bad fuel pump will make the engine run slightly leaner which is a bad thing because the computer doesn't know the current fuel pressure.
